The higher the alchohol "proof" (percentage), the higher the calories. Calories though aren't necessarily the only thing to watch for though... number of carbohydrates (that the body converts into sugar, then fat), are equally important to watch.

Hard alchohol (i.e., vodka, whiskeys, etc.), contain about 140 calories per one ounce shot, but zero carbs. A 12 oz beer on the other hand contains between 80 (light beers) to 160 (dark regular beers), of calories and anywhere from 3 to 20 carbs.

For a full list, google "Atkins diet carb guide"; there on many sites you can find the complete breakdown. Oh, and bottoms up too!

From what I know, hard liquor is high in calories, but low in carbs and beer is higher in carbs and lower in calories (but still has a lot of them!)... The only alcohol that I've heard has redeeming nutritional value is red wine (and only red--I think the nutrition has to do with the tannins in grape skins). Supposedly, a little glass daily or every other day can help ward off some heart problems. It's sort of like olive oil...good in small amounts and we have Europeans (vs Americans) as living proof!

Most liquour (vodka, rum etc..) is about 80 calories per ounce.

Most beers are around 200 +/- 50 calories per 12 oz.
Most lite beers are around 120 calories per 12 oz.

What kills calorie wise with liquor is what you mix with it. Tonic is basically the same thing as coke with no flavor = high in calories.
Club Soda is basically carbonated water = no calories.

Vodka, whiskey, gin, quality rums, and quality tequilas are low in calories (90-100). Stay away from liqueurs and low quality rums and tequilas. Caramelized sugar is used to give a golden color to low quality rums and tequilas.

If you are going to drink beer, stick with lite and low calorie beers like Budweiser Select (99 calories). Stay away from dark heavy beers and micro brews, they can have upwards to 200 calories.

wine

1 oz. rum or bourbon with diet coke,

1 oz vodka with diet tonic water
and lime

The problem is not in just One Drink. The problem is all the ones to follow and the nibbling that occurs along with them. Your resolve and discipline go out the window when you start to indulge.

Anything that isn't milk based/meant to be mixed with milk and beer is high in it.

Spirits are low/no cal, especially vodka
and white spirits reduce hangovers
say vodka and the likes, but if something is coloured like jim beam, it will gie you a worse one...

Grain liquers, stay away from mixers, beers, lagers, and ale's. If your watchin your weight, learn to drink em straight, try training wheels (lime and salt to battle bitter liquer taste)

None of them.

Ethanol (Alcohol) is very high in calories, plus they are "empty" calories (little nutritional value).
