Dogs cough because they have Kennel Cough or sometimes due to heart problems. A throat infection or bit of stick stuck in the back of the mouth also causes coughing. I would visit your vet for a solution.

Coughing. It can be due to a number of things. Firstly, it could be down to just a basic irritation ie dust, smoke etc.
Secondly, infectious tracheobronchitis aka kennel cough. Dogs exhibit a classic 'goose honk' cough when infected. A simple course of doxycycline is usually enough to sort it. Foreign bodies are another possibility but these tend to be less commmon in dogs although blades of grass trapped behind the soft pallet are not unheard of. Congestive heart failure (CHF) can also cause coughing. With this condition, the heart has to work overtime and pump harder. This results in the heart muscle getting larger to the point where it puts pressure on the trachea and causes coughing. The only way to diagnose any of these problems is with the help of youre trusty veterinary surgeon!

Take him to the vet to find out WHY the dog is coughing. Once you have a diagnosis, the vet can also give suggestions on what you can do to fix it.

This could be as simple as kennel cough or as serious as congestive heart failure! I'm not trying to scare you but the quicker you get your dog to the vet the better when it comes to coughs you don't want to wait around!!! Good Luck and keep us posted on the out come.

GO TO THE VET
Its irresponsible not to. If your dog has Kennel cough it will be contaminating all the other dogs in come into contact with. Its highly contagious. I don't understand why you haven't been to the vet?

Take the dog to the vet and see why it is coughing and if there is medication that can help it.

Take him to a vet asap, and until you do keep him away from other dogs - especially if you recently rescued him or he's recently been in kennels.
Kennel cough is very contagious, but easy to fix.
