Canon and Nikon are about even, and together they dominate market share. Another good one for digital cameras is Sony. I wouldn't go with Olympus or Pentax. They don't have the financial resources to commit to the R&D necessary to keep up with the other guys.
Nikon and Canon lense mounts are propriatary to their own brand, so you won't have much of a choice there. Among the independent lense manufacturers, I like Tokina and Tamron. Sigma or any of the house brand lenses aren't at the same level.

Actually photoace is deadon about third parties.

Typically their warranties are considerably shorter, where I know Nikons are 5 years across the board. I have yet to see any third party offer a 4 year or 6 year warranty.... extended warranty maybe (that i haven't seen either provided through the manufacturer, retailer perhaps).

Also, professionals don't shoot with third party lenses... and they use this equipment to make money, don't you think if they could save a little dough and get the same quality out of an off-brand they would? Not a single professional uses them or else these manufacturers would be marketing the crap out of that. The fact is they target the amateur and throw out bogus PR to make you think they came up with some magical new system that the camera makers haven't figured out how to do on the equipment they made. Also, camera stores make more profit on off-brand lenses than they do name brand.

And Sony I believe took over Minolta so you could use any old Minolta lenses on a Sony body.

But like stated before.... Canon and Nikon (Fuji) are the best, Olympus, Pentax and Sony are distant as far as reputations.

For point and shoots I prefer Canon and maybe Fuji...

Camera brands:

Canon and Nikon are pretty much equal on top, at least for SLRs. In point and shoots, Canon has a more full lineup.

Followed by:
Pentax

Then Olympus. Olympus seems to have an awful lot of refurbed cameras out there...

For lens brands:

Nikon-Canon-Pentax are pretty much equal. Fujifilm actually makes bodies/lenses for some medium format cameras, and those lenses are pretty good, so they're up there too.

Sigma and Tamron make good lenses, but the individual quality can vary more than the big camera companies. I would put them a notch lower.

Sony--well, they make good lenses for their Alpha cameras, and they contract out for good lenses on the high-end point and shoots. But a check of Sony's (confusing) website shows that their lens lineup is not very large, and the prices there are way too much compared to the competition. I then checked bhphotovideo and to my shock, Sony only had 3 lenses available, along with 7 lenses from Sigma and 5 from Tamron. So, Sony goes into last place for lens reputation.

Edit: Photoace is wrong about the third party lenses. Sigma EX lenses for example have 4-year warranties, while Tamron lenses have a 6-year warranty--hardly a "short warranty"! Certain lenses, like Sigma's 80-400mm Optical stabilized lense or Tokina's 12-24mm actually do as well or outperform their more expensive counterparts. The only two areas where third party lenses aren't as good as the name-brand camera companies lenses: 1) resale value and 2) individual variability is greater. But that doesn't mean the lenses are no good. The fact is that Sigma and Tamron offer lenses that you can't get from Sony or offer good lenses at far less than the big boys. Don't rule them out without actually trying them and check out the facts, not just opinions, on things like warrantees.

I have done a lot of research on cameras and who is preferred, since I too have looked into buying a digital SLR for my photography. I have taken pictures with all of them and I would rank Canon as being the best professional quality, then Nikon, Olympus and Pentax (So, the order you had them). I however am not sure about the lense quality, but I would assume that the lenses go with the cameras of the same brand.

For cameras, I would go Nikon, Canon, Pentax, Olympus.
For lenses, whichever camera you own, try always to go for the camera's own marque lenses, although all of my lenses are Sigma.
Sony don't make lenses, rather they use the best lenses they feel best for their brand. Both Pentax and Tamron have a good reputation, but Tamron don't make cameras.

I'd put Nikon and Canon on the top of the DSLR scale, with Olympus and Pentax being just behind them.

Here's the JD Power satisfaction survey for DSLR cameras.

As for lenses, I feel that Canon has some of the most advanced optics out there, with Nikon being close behind.
