They are not part of the rodent family at all... they are the funnest pet to have... they do not smell even though they have that reputation... they probally think you smell... each animal has a native scent and that is theirs... my ferret Sasha doesnt smell because i take care of her the RIGHT way. i think more people should get them because they always make you smile with the silly things they always end up doing!!! I love Sasha!

They are not destructive whatsoever... you are just saying all that because you dont have ferret i bet. get a life that doesnt involve talking crap about stuff you have no idea about.

I've never heard of them being unpopular pets... I'm the only one I know who has one now and everyone thinks he's the coolest. When we have people over the first thing they want to do is check him out. And you're correct that they do NOT smell if you take care of them proplerly. Of course they're a little musky regardless, but it isn't a foul odor unless they don't get bathed weekly and fresh litter every few days.

I have owned them and I agree that they are great pets but yes they do have a smell to them. No matter how much you bathe them or clean their cage they will always have a slight smell, unless they haven't been descented then they will have a stronger musky smell. I used to work for vets and they will tell you the same thing. You may not think they smell because you are used to them. I cleaned my ferret's cages constantly and the litterbox daily and I never smelled them nor did my husband but everyone else that walked into the house noticed it if they got near them. I had a few friends that had ferrets and they never smelled them either and the same for when I went to their house. The smell was one of the reasons why I first thought about not getting them but I'm glad I did because you get used to it and don't notice it and even if I did it still would have been worth it because they were so much fun to have around.

Actually, ferrets are the third most popular pet in the US, dogs and cats being the first two.

I think ferrets just have a bad reputation - a lot of people think of them as mean, stinky thieves. My parents thought I was nuts for wanting ferrets - I've wanted one since I was little and my parents always said that they're "dirty and stinky." Once I had a job and my own income, I finally got one and my parents still thought I was nuts and just crinkled their noses at the thought of me having one. I have five of them now and guess what? My parents love them almost as much as I do! I hear them all the time telling people how "neat" they are and how they aren't near as bad as some people think. They definitely aren't for everyone, but I think if more people would stop listening to the ferret 'myths' and actually interact with some ferrets and get to know them, they'd probably change their feelings towards them just like my parents did.

I agree with you - ferrets have been the best pet I've ever had so far! =)

Most of the people who don't like ferrets have never interacted with them and mostly listen to the old wives' tales still floating about.

They are also not rodents, they belong to the weasel family that also includes skunks, polecats, minks and otters.

We have five of them and wouldn't trade them for anything in the world.

You're right about them stinking, but only if their litter box is not cleaned daily, or their bedding is not washed regularly. They do have a 'musky' scent, but it's much worse if they haven't been descented. Most ferrets available in pet shops today are descented and spayed/neutered. They may also nip, as most babies do, but you can train them not to do that-it worked great with my Bubba and he's my sweet little boy who gives the nicest 'smoochies'.

I want a ferret so badly. I dont think they are that unpopular. The only complaint I've ever heard about them though were that they smell badly and are rodents. I dont think that is a very great argument though because any pet can smell (and if you dont take care of it properly of course it will smell) and who cares if they are rodents, they act seems to be as playful and friendly as a dog or a cat.

I know soeone who owned a ferret and to be honest, she said they it was the best pet she had.
People only say they arn't good pets becuase they have a reputation of smelling, biting and escaping, but really they dont. If you take care of them right (wich it sounds like you are) Then they make jjust a good a pet as any other animal.

Hope i helped , Luv kelz,.x

I have always thought ferrets were cute but people I have talked to said they wouldn't advise having one as a pet because they bite hard. I'm not really sure if this is true or not, but it is the only reason I can think of.

The only reason I don't have a ferret is because everytime I go near them in the pet store, I start to sneeze like crazy.

My parents say that they smell, but now I know. They only smell if you don't clean their cage enough!!!

I think they can be cute. I would get one if I had the chance but they need a lot of room and are pretty expensive.
