Direct Combat I asume you are refering to women in combat.
It is a role where the main purpose is combat roless. Although in Iraq MP's are involved in combat enviroments their direct mission is not a direct Combat role like an infantry soldier or a artillery person. Direct combat is just that things that involve you directly in combat
People involved in the motor transport are at times put into a combat situation but their position is not a direct combat position.
Women are allow to serve in roles that might put them in a combat enviroment but not in a direct combat role.

I'm all for equal opportunity, but how would you react if you were told women were now allowed on the national rugby team? I mean, that's another industry that is lacking in gender equality, isn't it? Can you see the parallels I'm making here? Women serve every day on the frontlines in Afghanistan. They are attached to units as medics, cooks, signallers, and if need be, they fight too - there's been nearly 100 American female fatalities in Afghanistan. Some from other ISAF nations too (Channing Day, British medic, died retrieving a casualty just recently). And they are all worthy of praise and respect. The issue is that women don't want these jobs to begin with, and few are suited to the role. The only roles not open to women in the ADF at the moment is Infantry, Cav, Arty and Special Forces. Do you know any girlfriend of yours who can manage a 12km yomp as a gunner in a medium machine gun section, carrying an FN Mag and 400 rounds of ammunition? The other thing that civilians fail to take into account is the main problem: temptation, fraternisation, and rape. If you've never been deployed you won't understand, but when you've spent six months in a jungle hellhole with nothing for entertainment, no electricity and having not seen a woman in for half a year, if a woman suddenly crops up attached to your unit the potential for rape or fraternisation is definitely real. I'm not saying that sort of thing is widespread, as women work in units with men all the time without problems, but its the arms corps that are most isolated and where the issue is real.

Direct Combat or Directed Combat means that you are in a unit whose primary mission is to find, engage, and destroy the enemy with face to face combat. That is why they say women can not serve in direct combat roles ie, infantry, cavalry, armor, but can serve in combat support roles ie. MP. Although MP's do come under direct fire and are engaging in battles with insurgents, their primary job is not a combat role. Hence why women are allowed to be MP's.

Someone is shooting at you and you are shooting back.
A situation where an individual operating in a combat role (i.e. Infantryman patrolling the streets of Baghdad) is engaged by or engages a known or unknown enemy with the intent to kill, capture the individual(s). The situation requires direct fire upon the individual.
If you can see someone pointing the weapon at you, that is direct combat.

Direct combat is force on force (army vs army). We are currently in a combat environment with many active engagements of hostiles but no longer force on force.

When you are in eye sight of the enemy and you are directly involved in combat.
Infantry fight with what they see vs. pilot could attack something he doesn't see. Therefore he would not be in Direct combat.
That's my guess.
