Jesus warned us of this: to be on guard against false teachers. People who don't know God's Word (the Bible) can easily be lead astray. Satan masquerades as an angel in light. Satan's servants (people who are deceived and are followers of Satan and don't know it) masquerade as servants of righteousness. (2 Corinthians 11:14) We who have a personal relationship with Jesus KNOW HIM and tests the spirits to see if they are from God. (1 John 4:6)
People who allow themselves to be "taken for a ride by false christs" have not spent time in the Word to know God's character and are not sensitive to the Holy Spirit who guides us unto all truth. By the way, I am a Catholic Christian and have been for 20 years. It is not unorthodox for Catholics to have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ....to be "born again". In fact, we ARE to be just that in order to be Catholic!

I totally agree with Big D.
The LORD is our Shepard, and HIS sheep should have no problem recognizing HIS voice.
There's a transformation that is essential to christian living mentioned in the book of Romans(12:2). Many Christians get caught up "Playing Church", or doing things the way they see others doing it (Traditionalism), and forget
to allow the living CHRIST, who predesignated us for HIS purpose, do the shaping.
Like Abraham, when I entered the military, I had to leave everything familiar. My parents, brothers, sisters, friends, and everything else I once identified with. The goal was to create a new person who would think and react a new way; even under irregular pressures. Obviously I'm talking about a soldier.
Mind you, the first thing I realized when I went to boot camp was, "I no longer belonged to myself!"
I said all that to say this; It could be that some haven't come to the realization that they no longer belong to themselves, therefore creating a Jesus of convenience (Idolatry), having an hearing-ear when it serves there purpose, and turning a deaf ear when in opposition to what's being said. This person ( a Carnal Christian) would have no problem going after anyone who played the part of a minister well.

Ignorance of God's Word - The bible. To spot a counterfeit, study the real thing. Any believer who is, “rightly dividing the word of truth” (2 Timothy 2:15), and who makes a careful study of the Bible, can identify false doctrine. For example, a believer who has read the activities of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit in Matthew 3:16-17 will immediately question any doctrine that denies the Trinity. Therefore, “step one” is to study the Bible and judge all teaching by what the scripture says.

People are always looking for something they can see that's tangible! That's why they wear idols and have them in their churches, they are so eager that they will believe someone that states they are the Christ! Look how many that have promised false Armageddon dates and they didn't come.

I think it was CS Lewis who said spirituality is like sailing - just because your out in the ocean doesn't mean you're necessarily going the right direction
