A century is a unit of 100 years.
1st century started on year 1 and ended on year 100, the 2nd century started on 101 and ended on 200, and so fourth.
1 - 100 >> 1st
101 - 200 >> 2nd
201 - 300 >> 3rd
...
21st century ends on
21 * 100 = 2100
So, it started on 2001.
21st century: 2001-2100

Technically it started January 1, 2001.
Most people will tell you January 1, 2000.
2001 is right because there is no year 0, so 100 was the 100th year and the end of the 1st century and 101 was the beginning of the 2nd century.
