few areas have cable and few areas seem to be able to get tiscali tv or virgin tv. So for most of us the only "choice" is Sky. Surely this isn't healthy? How come nobody has set up as a competitor in the satellite tv sector in the UK?

Because Rupert Murdoch was the only one rich enough to put the satellite system together. He also owns a lot of the programming on it and can refuse to let a competing system have access to his programming.

The only real compitition for Sky was BsB the most memorable thing about them was the "squarial" but they went bust through underestimating the costs and not getting the numbers of subscribers.
I can't get cable although in this area we've only had broadband for a couple of years, although freeview works here unless we have really stormy weather, it would be nice to have some choice.

The reason we don't have a satelite alternative is cost - sky has the satelites nobody else wants to put up the cash to get an alternative system off the ground.

As far as I'm aware, cable is available most places, or at least cities and towns, and is becoming increasingly popular.

I have virgin media and would never change to sky. Why would I want a big ugly dish on the side of my house when i can have a discreet wire running underneath my feet? I think virgin has made Sky nervous because they're catching up eg: recordable tv, pausible live tv and movies, as well as developing virgin channels.

So i would say that Sky has a very big rival indeed.

I wish I knew the answer to this. We in our household are stuck with Sky. There is no other option here in the Scottish Borders and in my town we can only get about a third of the freeview channels as the nearest transmitter is rubbish. And we lose the analogue signal next year (even though we can only get 3 channels on it)

Play TV will be getting launched in the UK early next year. They have got more than enough engineers to compete with Sky and I have a feeling they could begin to blow them out of the water! Look at their website - www.playtv.co.uk
Its all high definition with live pause & rewind like sky hd.
We'll definitely be leaving sky when it is launched!!

Use internet tv, its becoming better.

+gem, sky dont broadcast hd and neither will "play", its a half hd signal only, they merely call it SKY HD, just like HD Ready on tv isnt really HD. Bit of a con but its legal.
