My mother's rent is done on a sliding scale. She failed to report it to the powers above... she is still a temp she was only suppose to work for a few weeks but she has worked more then 4 months now. She isn't on pay roll but she is asking to be on pay roll.
Power from above sent paper work she will be revaluated in March 2008 she is scared they are going to get her on fraud ( i know it is) however She is over 50 years old and in poor health.
She is going to see if she can be on payroll and then report it i hope she does at least!
What words can i offer in comfort other then cross the bridge when you get to it!

Being in her 50s is not old, though if she is prosecuted she could try to dwell on her infirmities.
Her best bet would be to come clean and inform them herself that she is working and pay whatever she owes. If she declares it herself and pays back money there is no fraud to be prosecuted for.
All you can do is cuddle her and tell her that you will be there for her and to support her whatever she decides and whatever outcome.

Have her tell them that she didn't report it right away cuz it was a temp job, and she thought it would be over quickly, but as it continued things got out of hand. They will evaluate the problem and she will probably have to pay back some money--but they will let her make payments, it's not the end of the world, I doubt they'll prosecute if she still has a child at home.
That's probably the worst that will happen, one day at a time.

Why can't she simply tell them now about the change in her circumstance?
