I want to breed a thoroughbred dog. I want to breed japanese akitas. Are they easy to train, or do they learn bad behavior easily? I love akitas and that is what breeding should be about, love for the animal, but I don't want to raise mean dogs.

Please ensure you have done extensive research before getting an Akita. While they are gorgeous, intelligent dogs, they are not a breed for everyone.

As for breeding, very important information:

There are many homeless Akitas. After you've done your research and if they are indeed a breed for you, please consider getting a rescue dog. IF you do go the breeder route, make sure you get one from a reputable breeder through the Akita club and only after you've checked to make sure they throughly screen their animals for genetic problems.

Akitas are a rather strong-willed dog that is not known for being highly trainable. This is not to say they aren't smart- they are very intelligent....BUT they are highly independent.

They tend to be one-person or one-family dogs. They can be standoffish towards strangers- but a properly trained Akita whose owner has his dog under control should not display unwarranted aggression. An Akita in the wrong hands, however, can become aggressive.

Breeding a dog is about more than just "love for the animal" but it is a good start. If you truly want to breed dogs one day, keep an open mind and learn all you can from knowledgeable people. Start by going to some dog shows. There, you can meet and talk to responsible Akita breeders who will help you learn and research. You may even find breeders who will let you handle their dogs in Junior Handler dog shows!

Breeding should be done to better the breed- there are some dog breeds who are rampant with health issues and temperament problems due to over-breeding. Plus, there are a lot of dogs needing homes in shelters, so you need to make sure there are enough responsible, knowledgeable people lined up who will give your puppies a "forever home".

Research, research, research. No responsible breeder I know got started without first gaining knowledge and experience with their breed of choice. And most responsible breeders bred their first litter with the help of a mentor. You can't ever have enough knowledge.

I have to agree with everybodyelse and im sorry, no intention of rudeness here but. You do not have any buisness trying to breed dogs. Unless you have done years of reasearch or you have someone close to you that has been breeding for years, you should not be breeding. And if you did know anything then you would not be on this site asking, its just truth. Have you ever hade akita's if not then you should not be breeding, and how old are you anyways. I also don't think you should be breeding if you don't even know what a dog is called it is purebred not thoroughbred which is horses. I only think you want to breed because you like them, and its not only because you like there looks. Its about bettering the breed. I suggest you brush up on dog breeds and do alot of research before you jump to breeding. You don't seem like your a reliable breeder to me, but that's just me. ANd seriously no disrespect but im just telling you the truth. Plus also you have to do alot of research on pedigrees and which pedigrees are compatible which i don't think you are doing. Just slow down and think about this and do alot of research. I hope Ive helped and not offended you because this is the harsh truth you know.

Oh and Akita's are a hard breed to work with, they can have temperment problems much like any breed can, they are not for the first time breeder and owner. And i can't stress this enough DO YOUR RESEARCH.

Dogs are not thoroughbreds, horses are. Dogs are purebreds. If you want to get into breeding any breed, you need to do years of research - find a mentor who's already in the breed you're interested in and learn everything there is to know about them. That includes learning about animal husbandry, genetics, training, absolutely everything.

When you say you love akitas, you obviously mean you love their looks - you need to do a lot of research as to their temperament and trainability. Hands-on experience is best.

Leave the breeding to people who have spent years in their chosen breed who do it to improve the breed not for monetary gain.

If/when you find a breed that suits your lifestyle do yourself a favour and neuter it there are shelters choc full of unwanted PEDIGREED dogs without you adding to the problem just because you own and love a pedigreed dog doesn't give you the automatic right to breed it.

All dogs are trainable (mongrels too) and all dogs pick up bad behavior easily.

The WELFARE of your dog should be your first priority not when can i breed from it.

Also research is essential whatever type of pet you decide on so be a responsible pet owner when the time comes

I have had many breeds of dog, including Pugs, a Miniature Schnauzer, Bull Mastiffs, a Maltese Terrier, a Mini Foxy, a Jack Russel, a Bull Arab etc., but the most easy to train dogs I have ever owned are American Pitbull Terriers/American Staffordshire Terriers. They probably aren't as small as you would like, but they are incredibly intelligent and loyal. I know people are afraid of these dogs because of the things they read, but in fact with a bit of research you will find out just how incorrect the information provided by the media is. If you are willing to give it a chance, I think that a Pitbull/Amstaff could be perfect for you.

I agree with Kris you have a whole lot of work to do as far as educating yourself before attempting to breed. If the education process had begun already you would be using the correct terminology and you would know about the breeding process and the breed.

OK, no offense meant here at all, just truth. You have absolutely no business breeding dogs if you haven't any idea about their characteristics and tendencies. There is soooo much more to whelping pups than mating the parents. Please study your breed and consider postponing the breeding venture.
