Jesus told a parable about weeds and wheat. The servants of the master said to their master, "Hey, there are weeds growing in the wheat field. Should we pull them out?"
The Master said, "No, don't pull them up because if you do so, you'll inevitably pull up the good plants with the bad. Leave them to grow together until the harvest, and at that point, they will be sorted out, but not by you."
That may not help in identifying the "weeds" but what it does suggest is that a much more important thing to do than looking for the weeds is promoting the growth of all "plants" and then allowing the sorting out to be done at the proper time.
The bottom line? God's kingdom is about promoting growth, not finding and pulling weeds.

The mark of a true Christian is love for others and obedience to God’s Word (1 John 2:4; 1 John 2:10).

False Christians generally go around yelling about how everyone else is going to hell. True Christians are comfortable enough with their religion that while they encourage people to join it, they don't feel the need to denounce all the other religions, including other sects of Christianity.

A false christian trusts in his own goodness or good deeds to earn his way to heaven. This is not possible. The bible says none is righteousness. 'All have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God'. We must trust entirely on the price Jesus paid to redeem us. Jesus also said we must be born again of the Spirit. We must be led by the Holy Spirit to produce spiritual fruit for His kingdom. Spiritual fruit is love - joy - peace -goodness - kindness - patience - gentleness - faith - self-control.

Someone who comes up to you, gets in your face, and starts talking about 'Gawd' and 'being saved' and asking if you know Jesus, etc. is not a true Christian, as far as I'm concerned.
True Christians also do not preach hatred or intolerance of others, nor do they slavishly follow a charismatic leader/guru.
To me, true Christians are the people who quietly and unobtrusively live their faith. Their belief flows from them as naturally as light flows from the sun.

By remembering that, except for the grace of God, go ye!
Then give thanks that you are still alive to partake of the grace that was freely given to YOU by God in your own hour of need; given without regard to whether you consider yourself or anyone else a true Christian or a false Christian.
Be glad that you can now extend the grace you've been given to another, without judgment, as it was extended unto you....
Do this by the grace of our Father's Holy Name.
Then you will no longer need concern yourself asking how to apply false or true names to your Brothers and Sisters who may need your help, whether they are Christian or not.

Its not our place to tell a true one from a false one, its God's.
However, someone who does things for the glory and recognition of man instead of for God is a good sign they are getting something wrong.
