So many people are so quick to say, "the bible says this...the bible says that". but yet too ignorant....or lazy... (or both), to understand who was doing the talking, who was being talked to, who does it apply to, etc. It would seem as though they "believe" the bible when they can get it to say what they want it to say.
I say this is just no more than a fools way of lying.
And "we" know who is the father of all lies.

I think they think Ignorance is Bliss but boy won't they be surprised in the end!
They are not as smart as they like to make out, very few can even come close to making a intelligent argument, they just get rude and hostile and think that is a sign of intelligence.

Christians tend to pick and choose what is great about the Bible too. Tell me, do you think a woman who is raped should marry her attacker (EX 22:16 And if a man entice a maid that is not betrothed, and lie with her, he shall surely endow her to be his wife.)? Do you like shrimp? (Laviticus 11:10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that move in the waters, and of any living thing which is in the waters, they shall be an abomination unto you) Do you work, shop, or go out to eat on Sundays (forcing someone else to work) Ex. 20:9 -10 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work. But the seventh day is the sabbath of the LORD thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates.
Hypocrisy when it comes to the context of the bible is a two way street.
EDIT
I am sure you see this as proving your point. However, my point is that the bible clearly states a man should marry the young girl he has raped. It is plain about what seafood can and can not be eaten according to god. It is VERY clear that no work should be done on Sunday. Further, Christians tell me all the time that EVERY part of the Bible is true and ALL the advice in the Bible is how god wants me to live my life. So, if you eat shrimp in a restaurant on Sunday (creating a need for someone else to break god’s law), you have chosen to ignore part of god's laws, and you are a hypocrite. Or, like you have accused me of doing, you randomly select the verses that are important for you to live your life by and reject the rest. I just reject more of the Bible than you do, and I am honest about my rejection. Perhaps, rather than being high and mighty with atheist, you should examine why you believe in some parts of the Bible and reject others.

they choose to twist up the true meaning into something they want it to be to prove false point (the bible is what it is). I'm not talking about all of em...but the ones that cherry pick parts of the bible. just like i had to study and dissect science, i wish that people would study and dissect the bible to get a better feel for it. or at least get an understanding of it.

...And yet at the same time, when we bring up something like that, no one can ever answer our question. The answers are always "well the Bible has a lot of deeper meanings" or they just doubletalk their way out of it. And everyone always says "well that was taken out of context" -- but no one ever seems to explain what the context is supposed to be.
Trust me, I'd LOVE to hear a decent explanation for some of the stuff in that book.

The context under which the Bible was written depending on which book...I'll assume NT...was ROMAN RULE...harsh, unforgiving, and intolerable for those in lower pesant classes. The book was supposed to do a couple of things...Provide some hope for those suffering masses and allow the ROMAN rulers a degree of control for giving up the hope/optimism that things may/might change for the better. PEACE!

The bible CAN say what an interperter wants it to say. People focus on one portion over another conflicting portion all the time.
And I have studied the bible extensively. I am NOT a biblical scholar, however, nor will I ever claim to be. Don't expect me to quote verse for verse.

Nearly everyone (this goes for both sides!) once having chosen a side to an issue, will actively seek out evidence to support the decision, and discredit evidence against it (often by deriding the source). It's just human nature.
More people need to open their minds and actually learn and understand an opposing view before arguing against it.

You know, some of us atheists were raised christians, and actually took the time to read and understand the book we were expected to believe in. Anybody can cherry-pick verses, but claiming "it's all out of context!" anytime somebody points out an inconvient passage is Bill O'Rielly's lame excuse.

Good point actually. However, christians don't know the context either, nor the original wording (translations are never perfect). So why doesn't God send an updated version every century or so?

the Bible makes for some entertaining reading, but the ultimate source of lies can be found by anyone who looks into a mirror, it's part of being human to lie...
