Is he an inside or outside cat? If he's an inside cat then only let him out to go and do his 'business' (unless you have a litter box) or get some fresh air for a few minutes (10/30 minutes) and watch him for some of the time, make sure he doesn't go over there.
How old is he? Maybe you could give him a toy so he doesn't feel the need to wander off, he could stay out and play in the yard for a while. I have the same problem, there's stry cats around my street, so a lot of people leave cat food out for them. He's probably just trying to be nice, but since you already told him, just simply say you want your cat to stay alive, and over feeding him doesn't help, he needs to be healthy! Cats normally don't just eat when they're hungry, like people. Good luck!!

Simplest thing in the world ... KEEP YOUR CAT INDOORS!!
It is not safe for cats or dogs to be out on the loose! There is too much risk from other animals ... domestic and wild ... motorists (some of whom purposely AIM for animals in the road, and don't think yours never goes there!), ticks, fleas, weather extremes, etc.
You are lucky your cat has survived, unharmed, for this long!
Please, make it a fulltime indoor cat! It may dislike it to start with, but cats adjust! Just be sure you spend time brushing and playing with your cat, and give it an area to perch by a window so it can keep an eye on the outside world!

keep your cat indoors. I lost my baby in June because I didn't want to be mean by keeping him inside all the time. Some people moved in the house next door & apperantly put out antifreeze to get rid of all the stray cats ( cruel they could have called the animal shelter) My kitty was taking his evening stroll & came back poisoned enducing a stroke. We took him to the vet but eventually had to have him put down. People have freedom of choice & if the old man chooses to put food outside you cant stop him. But what if someone decides to termanate your kitty? You cant stop them. Keep your kitty in the house!!!!

Go to your local shelter and get him a cat for free. Or you can join www.freecycle.org and ppl. on there often give away cats & kittens. I saw 2 ads for free cats & kittens in my area just yesterday. Then keep your cat indoors.

the only thing i can suggest is to keep your cat indoors. your cat obviously won't like it for a while but be persistent and he'll get used to it.
