We do not put tradition above scripture but we put them side by side so that we are inspired by both what scripture says and what the proper authorities appointed by the Holy Spirit have to say. This way, we have the bible and tradition to guide us in our actions. Without tradition and the magisterium, we cannot know how to interpret the bible and we will all make up our own interpretations and have many different ideas and be divided. With tradition and the Magisterium to guide us, then we are always united, we are guided by the Spirit of God who speaks through His properly appointed representatives ordained with holy orders with the sacrament of the priesthood. So we can have less chances of going wrong. The devil then can have less chances of leading us astray. For example our leaders teach us abortion and contraception are bad because they kill innocent babies. Without the Holy Spirit it is difficult to know some of these things unless the proper authorities lead you to the right path.
Mary is sinless and was assumed to heaven. This is not in the bible but if you study theology you will realize this is true. You see true theology is faith enlightened by reason. This means it is not enough to follow your reason, there are things God reveals to men through the Holy Spirit that are not in the bible like when the angel said "Hail full of grace, the Lord is with thee."
Tradition was there even before the scriptures were written so what did the early Christians use to guide their actions? Of course they followed the duly appointed leaders or elders of the community. Their power came from God so the Christians were the Church even before the bible was written. The early Christians must have loved Mary and must have known she was sinless and assumed into heaven because they must have looked at her grave and saw that her tomb was empty. Thus, she was assumed into heaven with her body and soul.
We don't pray to the statues, we put them there to remind us of their good example and we ask for their intercession like you might ask your father or mother or parent to intercede for you when he or she is alive or maybe even when he or she has passed away. We believe our parents are still alive in the spirit even if they have passed away
Confessing to priests is a sacrament instituted by Christ when He spoke to His apostles, the first priests. He said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit whose sins you shall forgive they are forgiven, whose sins you shall retain they are retained." So we confess to the priests because God gave them the power to forgive sins. We know God forgives us because the priest gives us God's absolution and we are liberated from the slavery of sin.

They don't, actually.
Here is the teaching on it:
In the Second Vatican Council’s document on divine revelation, Dei Verbum (Latin: "The Word of God"), the relationship between Tradition and Scripture is explained: "Hence there exists a close connection and communication between sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture. For both of them, flowing from the same divine wellspring, in a certain way merge into a unity and tend toward the same end. For sacred Scripture is the word of God inasmuch as it is consigned to writing under the inspiration of the divine Spirit. To the successors of the apostles, sacred Tradition hands on in its full purity God’s word, which was entrusted to the apostles by Christ the Lord and the Holy Spirit.
"Thus, by the light of the Spirit of truth, these successors can in their preaching preserve this word of God faithfully, explain it, and make it more widely known. Consequently it is not from sacred Scripture alone that the Church draws her certainty about everything which has been revealed. Therefore both sacred Tradition and sacred Scripture are to be accepted and venerated with the same devotion and reverence."

Very Good Question . I've learned that the early Roman church didn't want to offend any body by preaching the scriptures ( Hell and damnation ) and made up little dos to make them feel better.

Why did Jesus ask us to confess our sins to each other?
Why did Martin Luther take the side of the Pharisees and declare certain books to be uninspired?
Why did Martin Luther remove 6 books and TRY to remove Revelation?
Why do fearful fundamentalists such as yourself believe all the misconceptions taught to you?
Why do you block Catholics from answering your misconceptions?
Why?

Half of them probably aren't aware that they are doing that. They'll just blindly do as their priests say, without question.
Same with a lot of religions. The members take their holy men at their word, what they say, goes.

First it is only through tradtion that we know what books are in the Bible. Protestants use sola scriptura as a method to make up doctirne from a few passages.

Why do all Xians?
It says in the Bible to love your neighbor.
Not to 'love your neighbor, unless he is an atheist, a Jew, a Muslim, a Wiccan, or any other variation of non-Xian.'
Yet many practice this.
Why?

By putting tradition ahead of the Bible, the Church can teach whatever it wants to teach. The Church is just like the Pharisees whom Jesus said: "You have made the word of God invalid because of your tradition." Matt. 15:6
As an example, the Catholic Athanasian Creed defines the trinity this way: "So the Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not Three Gods, but One God. So likewise the Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not Three Lords but One Lord. And in this Trinity none is afore or after Other, None is greater or less than Another, but the whole Three Persons are Co-eternal together, and Co-equal."
Where does the Bible say: "The Father is God, the Son is God, and the Holy Ghost is God. And yet they are not Three Gods, but One God"? NOWHERE!
Where does the Bible say: "The Father is Lord, the Son Lord, and the Holy Ghost Lord. And yet not Three Lords but One Lord"? NOWHERE!
Where does the Bible say: "In this Trinity none is afore or after Other, None is greater or less than Another, but the whole Three Persons are Co-eternal together, and Co-equal"? NOWHERE!
As Jesus said to the religious leaders: "You have made the word of God invalid because of your tradition."
Not one of the practices of the Church can be backed up by the Bible:
confessing to priests
mary sinless and assumed
x-tra books in the bible
praying to statues

There's something of an exodus from the RC of people who have finally read the Bible.
My husband's parents were RC. When his mom was dying, he offered to read to her from the Bible. Her reaction, "Get that book out of here. That's the priest's job." I wonder where she got that idea?
Enough said.

Yeah I never got why they pray to Mary. The Bible clearly says it's a sin to pray to anyone other than Christ/God and Mary ain't God.
And my sins are between me and God (literally). It's nobody's business except the One who forgives.
