The standard answer in here is Nikon or Canon, both fine cameras. Since I like to be different I usually suggest at least looking at the new Pentax line, the K100D, K100D Super and the K10D.

All 3 have the Image Stabilization (IS) in the camera body so you don't have to buy it every time you buy a lens.

The 100 & 100 Super are both 6.1mp cameras. The 100 Super has "dust removal" to keep the sensor clean.

The 10 has 10mp and the "dust removal".

Every Pentax K-mount lens ever made will mount to these bodies and, even though you'll have to use manual focus, the IS will still work with them. Over the years Pentax offered some very good glass and its inexpensive on ebay and your local craigslist.

You can read reviews of all 3 cameras at dpreviews.com or shutterbug.com or popphotography.com.

Note: Avoid the K110D since it lacks IS. It may be out of production.

Depends upon whether you have existing lenses or not. Here's some recommendations, in no particular order:

Canon: Canon EOS 40D

Nikon: Nikon D80 or Nikon D200 (the new D300 is about to be released too)

Fujifilm: Fujifilm S5 Pro (a D200 body with a Fujifilm sensor!)

Pentax: Pentax K10D

Sony: Sony A100 digital SLR

Any of these cameras will do just fine. So, if you've got lenses in one of these systems, the choice of camera is more or less obvious. If you don't have any lenses yet at all, get to a store, handle these cameras and see which one feels "right" to you. It should be natural in your hand, the buttons should be in logical places, the menus should make sense, and the build quality should be something you feel confident in. The choice will be obvious once you actually handle the cameras.

The Nikon D200 is a great professional quality SLR digital camera. Since it's an SLR, you can use interchangeable lenses made by Nikon, Sigma, and others. Nikon optics are tremendous. Canon also makes some great digital SLR and SLR-like cameras. The SLR-like cameras offer just about all of the features of an SLR, with the exception of interchangeable lenses.
