A multi-toned carpet that is made to withstand cleaning.
I believe there are carpets that are better for cleaning because of the way they are dyed...some dye and carpet fabric holds up better to cleanings than others. Go to your local carpet store and talk to them about your needs and they can tell you what to look for.
I do not recommend a berber, or any other carpet with loops in it. The dogs nails (assuming that's what your pets are) will catch and tear them when they play. And corners on toys and stuff like that can also catch them and rip them.
We put a low shag carpet in our family room, which sees a lot of traffic from our two dogs as that's where the door to the yard is, and we've had it since May. The carpet is two tones of brown, well the light tone is almost a beige and the darker one is more of a regular brown. It looks nice, it hides dirt so that I don't feel like I have to vacuum it every day, and when I have had to clean it with carpet cleaner, it has held up to it...unlike some types of carpet which get lighter in the areas you clean them because you are taking the dye out with the stain.
Hope this info helps but again, I really recommend that you go to your local carpet store, talk to some one there about your needs, and look at your options.

The house I live in a 3 bdrm ranch with wall to wall BERBER carpeting.. It's tightly woven and it's got a tonal square pattern on it... I have 2 toddlers and a large breed dog ! Our carpet looks pretty good. I have it cleaned about 2x a yr. but, I vacuum everyday... I also use a mixture of baking soda/salt about every 6 months to deodorize the carpet and pick up ANY loose debris. I don't have much of a problem with stains showing or dog hair.. I brush my dog or brush and vacuum my dog and we don't wear shoes in the house.. The only thing I would change about the carpet is to NOT have it right up against the doors leading to the outside.. I would put tile down in those areas since the dog, children etc.. go in/out those doors and the rug is a bit stained.. Also, berber holds water when it gets wet- which can mold. However, I haven't had any problem with that.... Good luck

Children AND dogs? Goodness me, I wouldn't have either. Dog hair gets tangled into the carpet fibres, together with dog smell!! and children usually wreck anything nice, without any malice of course.
Your best answer is one of those new fangled wood floors that click together. They can be laid by a careful amateur and are instantly cleanable. Put carpet down when the children arer old enough and when you are prepared to put up with entangled dog hair.

If you don't want wood flooring, then i would buy quite a expensive carpet as they have good stain resistance, the cheaper ones get dirty quickly, i have children and a cat, but my lounge is a through fare as we don't have a hall way, my carpet is wool, and is as new, and its 5 year-old, happy shopping

Why not have an area designated for each kid to use for chalk designs, etc.? That way the design can be changed whenever you want it to be and you don't have to deal with allergens, mold, mildew, pet dander, dust mites, etc. You can simply sweep/vacuum twice a week, mop once a week or as necessary, and ta-da! Plus, it will be fun. Or you can invite over your friends and paint the floors and party at the same time!

No carpet is the best carpet. Alergens, Fungus, Mits, other microscopic bugs. You can expose your children to Asthma type infections. Get rid of that diseased carpet ASAP! your health depends on it.

Flotex is pretty good, the only drawback is that there is no pile it just shrugs of water and stains, another good one is Burmatex.
