I hate to tell you, but your teacher is FLAT OUT wrong.
How can spelling out a word be wrong? That just makes no sense.

I think your teacher is wrong. Usted or Ustedes should be used. In my opinion it´s terrible if you write a letter to a Spaniard you don´t know and write the abbreviation Ud. for you. It would be considered almost rude. I don´t know what your teacher means? Does he/she mean that you always should use Ud. or Uds. and in which context? Sounds very odd to me. Just ask your teacher, because there are a lot of Spanish speaking people answering your question and some are really confused. At least I find it very odd what your teacher said!

Go to studyspanish.com. I tutored in spanish last year and used this site a few times with students. It has a pretty good explanation of ud/usted.

It isn't wrong to write Usted out!! Anyway, in my school we learnt to abbreviate it as VD, so that's strange.... My spanish teacher told me not to write the abbreviated version!

NO it is not wrong, she's/ he's stupid!!! you can spell it out if you want to but it's just easier to write Ud/Uds rather than usted/ustedes.
if she told you to abbreviate it or it would be wrong.....
don't abbreviate & see what she does to you.
if she gives you a detention then have your mom or dad talk to the school. but don't seve the detention!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I dont mean to be rude but i think it would be better to listen to your teacher in this case. If you dont think that part is correct use in the real world thats fine, but while in his class with him grading you, his word is final.
so, in his class you are wrong for spelling it out.

No, not really.
but it probably helps the teacher when he corrects tests, papers, etc.
Although if your teacher DID say it was wrong, it will be counted wrong in his class.
