I have a friend who can't open a checking account because the banks are telling him he has an outstanding charge from a past bank. He said that he closed the bank account (which i doubt), but they, for some reason, didn't close it "completely" and some recurring fee was charged every month. Here's the kicker. The banks will tell him he has the outstanding fee, but they won't tell him what bank he owes the money too.

I have told him that if he ran a credit report, he could find out where the charges were coming from because it would show up (since, apparently, calling the banks you USED to bank with is too much of a hassle... let alone remembering the names of the banks.) Are there any other means for him to find out what bank is charging him? I know this sounds goofy, but I don't want to give this guy any excuse that he can use to continue to justify what I believe to just be laziness. Thanks!

He is probably on chex systems because of it. If you contact them they will tell you what bank the money is owed to.

Your friend is probably on Chexsystems.

He can go to www.chexsystems.com and input some personal info such as name, address, social, etc and receive a report in the mail as to how much he owes, what bank, when the account was reported, etc

Most banks can only tell whether someone is in chexsystems and not to whom the money is owed.

Even if he runs a credit report most likely his debt will not be on there unless the outstanding debt was reported to a collection agency - when a bank charges off an account they report to chexsystems not the credit bureau and if they can't collect the money in a time frame they specified they will then notify a collection agency and at that time it'll appear on the credit report

Most likely he closed the account with either charges still outstanding, or even worse checks outstanding, in other words closed it because he did not want to pay the overdraft fees. Yes they will tell you or send you a letter stating why they could not open an account, he just does not want to pay what he owes. He knows he just does not want to do anything about it, not a person you should trust.

He is lazy and how could someone not remember at which bank you had an account with. I mean honestly how many bank accounts did he open up. Tell him to get off his lazy bum, find out and put an end to it.
