Colds and infections all seem to get worse at night.
I'd make a lemon tea. Boil a cup of water, squeeze a fresh lemon into it, add enough honey to taste. It is antiseptic and tasty too.

Fluids. I went to the doctor with a sore throat and she suggested drinking plenty of apple juice which really helps. If this is recurring problem, see you doctor becuase you may need to take some sort of antibiotics, particularly as you're saying your tonsils feel swollen.

This might sound odd but I always like to gargle with hydrogen peroxide it usually makes the pain go away for a good while. WARNING: Do NOT swallow it! Gargle and spit out then wash your mouth out. It will also foam in your mouth thats normal. I promise it will taste bad and feel weird with all the bubbles, but it should work. Hope you feel better.

Gargle warm salt water or Listerine. That always helps me out.

I use cough drops call Cepestat (sp?). They kill germs so they actually help you get better; not just mask the pain and irritation. Hope you feel better soon!
