First point - the NHS is free at the point of delivery.

Second - have you asked your GP to review your medication, and if appropriate to refer you to a Pain Clinic.

Perhaps the 'cocktail of medication' is not tailored for you. This is why you should talk it over with your GP.
Quite often back pain involves so-called 'nerve pain'. Control of this type of pain requires totally different drugs for pain from tissue damage eg ibuprofen and codeine.

Helena,

I really sympathize with your pain. I don't know where you are located but you may be able to check with your local welfare dept. to see if they have some type of rehabilitation system. If this is something that keeps you from working but can be fixed with surgery so that you can return to work, they will pay for the surgery.

However, you may have a bigger problem than just the bill. If you have had several procedures unsuccessfully and your own surgeon refuses to do any more surgery, you may find it hard to find another surgeon who will. And even then, they may just be doing it to get the bucks. Sometimes with severe nerve damage, there is no repair possible. You may be able to get a second opinion but if more than one surgeon tells you that they can't repair the damage, I would tend to think that there isn't much that can be done.

I wish you all the best!

No doctor will treat you for free unless you happen to have citizenship in a country with universal health care. If you don't, you're out of luck.

When you find this doctor, let me know.

I will use him/her if I ever sustain a back injury!

Thank You!
