Dante comes across a man who is standing up, bend over with his head in hole. On questioning the man. Dante learns that he is the previous Pope. On dying, that Pope had found the one before him in the same position. He then kicked that Pope causing him to fall into the hole. He then made the mistake of looking into the hole and got his own head stuck. He will be standing there until the current Pope dies, come along, sees him, kicks him, and then gets his own head stuck. He will then be stuck until the next Pope comes along. All the earlier Popes are piled up in line in the hole below him.

Pope Nicholas is turned upside down in a round hole between rocks and his feet are covered in oil and fire from above brushes his feet.
Pope Nicholas fears that Pope Boniface will share his fate.
