For me it is losing my independence, the possibility of pain that couldn't be controlled and really not ready to die at this time.

thinking about cancer, means thinking about the possibility of dying. Death is a unversal fear for most of us. Also, there are a lot of things about cancer that we don't know. The unknown causes fear. The procedures needed to put someone into remission are not easy to cope with at the best of time. Chemotherapy is very hard mentally as well as physically. All these things contribute to the fear many of us have concerning cancer.
Hope this helps.

I'm not so afraid of cancer, it's the treatment that scares me. The drugs make you sick. And when I see people out collecting money for the cancer society, I will NOT give money to them. This country is always looking for some new wonder drug.
There are natural treatments for cancer, one is zeolite. My friends cat had cancer last year and the vet wanted to put her to sleep. Well now the cat's still alive and doing well thanks to zeolite and other natural stuff we have been giving her.

Cancer is frequently connected to death. The fear of death is a universal phenomenon. No matter where you go in the world, you will always find large numbers of people who are afraid of dying. The reason for fearing death is obvious: Death is the greatest mystery of all. Fear of the unknown is incredibly powerful. Since death is considered the biggest "unknown" of all, many people find death terrifying.
Hope this helps

When we see that the doctors define several types of cancer with "unknown causes", that believes in people a great insecurity because if the doctors do not know what causes that disease, its prevention becomes something uncertain or very complicated.

I watched my wife of 20 years spend the last three years of her life trying to fight the disease. Cancer is a cruel and painful illness. It takes a normal healthy person and reduces them to a frail shell of their former selves.
It used to be a common perception that only smokers got cancer so who cares...they brought it on themselves....etc, etc, etc. Of course, most people know that there is no way to predict or avoid the disease.

because having cancer is like having small bombs in your body, more like land mines, you still dont have a definite cure, you can be on remission after chemotherapy and radiation treatments and yet it can still exacerbate when u least expect it. or you think you have dealt with it in one spot, it will surprisingly show up in another part of your body. if left untreated, it will slowly metastasize to the whole body until its all spread that treatment is impossible. having cancer is like having a death sentence without the possibility of parole, you can be sitting in your cell for a long time and yet you still know that your time will be up.

The almost certainity of death. The pain and hardships involved with treatments. The experiences of watching other cancer patients. The lack of money, proper health care, and proper insurance to even get the treatment you need.

What everyone else said is one reason, and the other that comes to mind is in many cases the cause is a mystery - so people feel out of control about preventing it, this is scary to most people.

Have you ever seen someone die of cancer? It's a slow painful death. Who wouldn't be afraid.
