I would go with Wing Chun... Wing Chun is more stripped down martial art that is a little more modern in it's approach compared to Hung Gar... There are not too may forms to learn and the footwork and stances are actually useable...

It also only has minimal weapons to, rather than 27 different variations of the same thing...

The thing that I like most about Wing Chun is that it can be as simple and direct as you want or as flowery and evasive as you like, contrary to popular belief it does cover all rages yes even grappling and yes it is in the traditional system, in fact the stance itself suggests that you should go to the ground if you are attacked high at the weak point of your balance and it's made contract with you... But anyway,,, Both are cool arts

Nothing against Hung Gar, but I feel Wing Chun is better suited for a smaller framed person like me. From what I've seen, Hung gar relies a lot more on brute force where as Wing Chun doesn't.

Wow, great question... both are excellent styles, and related. Hung Gar is probably more comprehensive, and has things for nearly every situation, while Wing Chun, in keeping with the purpose of styles, specializes in fewer moves, but perfects them more.... That being said, I'd rather study Wing Chun's 3 forms, (elbow heavy) and it's Dummy exercises.

WING CHUN short range fighting
HUNG GAR hard long fist or medium range fighting.
Seeing that most self defense if it is truly self defense starts by surprise at close range I would pick WING CHUN.
It's taijitsu or body movement science is well developed and ahead of most charge and clash methods.
Mind you charge and clash has it's advantages also.

I would choose Wing Chun.

It was created by a woman who needed to defeate a larger opponent at close contact...which is perfect for someone like me, a lady who would like classes for self defense. There aren't a lot of places around here that teach the forms though : /

Wing Chun!!!

Why...well I like the idea of simultaneous blocking, evasion, striking coupled with real self defence focus on fighting re: joint striking, manipulation.
