I was on lexapro while my husband was deployed to Iraq.It tremendously helped me to deal with my anxiety as his deployment came during a really stressfull time. There were a couple of side effects though. One was it made me realy sleepy for the first week. The other we never could figure out if it was a coincidence or if it was an indirect side effect.I developed a blood clot that broke loose and went to my lungs.I also gained about 30 pounds while on it. It took about 2 weeks for the lexapro to start making a difference. And once I got off the lexapro,it took about a month before it got out of my system.Be sure to talk to your doctor about any concerns you have about side effects and withdrawls if you decide to get off it.

I was on 40 mg of Lexapro for about a year...keep in mind this is an EXTREMELY high dosage. I was on it for Bulimia, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, and Depression. While I was on it, I was the most patient person in the world. Nothing ever made me angry or sad. I was always so calm. I slept ok, too. But, my depression and Bulimia were still somewhat issues, although not nearly as bad. I gained about 35 pounds..which I hated! I was also put on Ativan, which I became heavily addicted to. After a stint in rehab and residential treatment for the eating disorder, I was weaned off of all my meds completely. Here comes the bad part. The withdrawal symptoms of Lexapro...it's like death. I could barely get out of bed. I was constantly nauseus, and had a horrible sensation of vertigo that would not cease, even in my sleep! I would have out of body episodes, and totally forget how I ended up somewhere, or what I was doing. I detoxed for about 2 weeks before I felt better. Just be careful...and if your doctor reccomends an abnormally high dosage, question why before you take it. Hope this helps!

Yes, I was having horrible panic attacks and anxiety and was put on Lexapro (the first time I was diagnosed with anxiety although I think I've had it a long time). The Lexapro absolutely lifted the anxiety, and then the underlying depression reared its ugly head and I also went on Zoloft. But it's been very good, although I also gained weight. I've been on for a year and will start titrating down in a few months (very slowly).

I took it for about a year--they prescribed it for anxiety (I was having a really hard time with graduate school and feeling overwhelmed), and I think it actually worked against my depression, which I wasn't even very aware of having. It made me really sleepy for the first month or two but that eventually went away. I went off of it so I could get pregnant and haven't needed to go back on. It really helped regulate my moods and kept me at an even level so that I could get my life back to normal. I think it took about 6 weeks to really kick in. Since I stopped, I haven't needed it or been depressed.

I worked on some of the research studies before the drug was approved by the FDA (thus saw a lot of people taking it for the same thing in the same time frame). It did seem to help with anxiety, but most people waited 2-4 weeks before they saw a difference.
