My girlfriend had one that would occasionally freak out and bite the **** out of the nearest person. The animal control said he was a menace to society(really, they said that) and he had to be put down. He was treated like a king while in her possesion, so she can't understand why her otherwise sweet boy freaked out and hospitalized her with bites sometimes. I say he didn't learn the pecking order and should have been dominated more so he learned his place in the pack. What do you gous think? Maybe my idea would have just gotten me eaten up:?

She did mention her ex husband who was only around during his puppyhood played rough and encouraged attack behavior. But she says he was a good boy even after the divorce and became violent much later

This can happen from a thyroid imbalance. She should have the vet test to see if the dog's thyroid is functioning properly.

It was probably a training problem but on rare occasions there are also dogs that sometimes mentally snap and do this. If she treated him like a "king," it may be that he did not have enough training and structure and felt he was at the top of the pack order. But you don't have to dominate them to prevent that problem - you just have to obedience train them properly and set appropriate ground rules.

No breed is prone to violence.

Some individual dogs are too aggressive, because of chemical imbalance, abuse, lack of socialization, brain tumor...

He should have been evaluated for medical problems at the vet and enrolled in obedience class.

No dog is "prone to violence" - people are and your girlfriend sounds like a very uncaring, dumbell.

Somehow I doubt this dog "hospitalized" her with bites - maybe stitches at the emergency room, but believe me, that dog was messed up by her or her ex.

Be careful with this "girlfriend", she sounds like a chronic liar and fabricates to justify doing what she wants to do for her own convenience.
