You shouldn't have to clean his ears every day, this could irritate them and make them sore. See your vet or a different one I think you need to get Clean Aural it is an ear cleaner, I use it for my Lab, she is prone to ear infections and needs them cleaning regularly. I clean them twice a week.

It is ear gunk. Literally. You have to clean this because it can lead to an ear infection. The stuff can really smell too. It is because your dog has floppy ears, and it doesn't vent well. My dog's ears are really bad. She is a dobie/rottie mix. She is mostly deaf due to untreated ear infections. Her ears have got to be the worse I have ever seen, or smelled. My vet said some of it could be because of allergies. So I switched her food to lamb and rice and that seemed to decrease some of the junk, but any time her ears get wet- swimming, playing with the hose, baths; it is a constant battle to get her ears completely dry. Right now I am cleaning her ears every day with a cleaner and we go through q-tips like water, she sees me get the cleaner she runs under the table. I feel so sorry for her, but it has to get done, I try to give her a treat when I'm done, if she will look at me.
Try clipping the hair around the ears to help ventilate it more. Good luck.

Brown stuff does not sound normal to me, although an infection usually does have a distinct sweet smell. It should not require daily cleaning though dogs ears need regular (say weekly) cleaning to prevent infections. I wouldn't be satisfied with your vet's answer and I'd get a second opinion. Brown gunk every day seems abnormal.

RE:
Dog has brown gunk in his ears?
My border collie/lab mix has brown stuff in his ears that I have to clean out every day. He's been to the vet before and we've asked about it, but our vet says its not an infection or anything. Is it just ear wax? And why do I have to clean them every day?

This sounds like it is a yeast infection in the ear. Actually that is exactly how I would describe the yeast infections my hound mix gets in his ears sometimes. If you take you dog to the vet, they should be able to tell you pretty quick if that is what it is, just a quick swab of the ear and peakin under a microscope. They will give you some earwash stuff that is made just for the infection. Good luck with you dog!

That doesn't sound normal to me. Are the ears red and itchy? Does the dog scratch his ears and shake his head all the time? Your dog shouldn't have that much wax that you have to clean then out every day. See another vet.
My dog has had brown waxy stuff before, and it has always been an ear infection. In her case it was yeast, and I had to put antibiotic ointment in her ears. Now I have an ear cleaning solution that I put in after swimming, or every 2 weeks. She hasn't had any discharge since.

He could have ear mites, in which case there is a very good product called "Thornit" you can use. It comes in powder form and you just need to sprinkle a very tiny amount inside the ear flap of each ear. The ears will be clean within a day or so. It comes with full instructions on the packet and costs about £7 in the UK. ($15) I buy mine from :-www.caninechemists.co.uk:
Tap in "Thornit" into your search engine and you can read all about it. There is also a list of stockists where you can buy this product.
I have used it regularly for many years on my dogs and it keeps their ears as clean as a whistle .
Worth a try!

It's ear wax. It needs to be cleaned because it can turn into an infection. As long as his inside ear color is pink there should be no infection. If it's red, he probably has an infection.
It sounds like a genetic thing, that his ear canal doesn't drain good. Keep his ears clean and he should be fine.

Sometimes brown stuff would indicate ear mites, but if the vet says not then it is just part of good dog parenting. You don't have to clean everyday, just regularly like once a week.

It's dirt, ear wax and debris. You don't have to clean them every day but you should. Cleaning this 'gunk' out will PREVENT ear infections.
