In today's world of express delivery, fax machines, e-mail, and teleconferencing, some rules of communication have changed from 15-20 years ago. Where face to face resignation is impossible, a letter will suffice, especially that is required and face to face is just one way to present it. One good way to resign is to resign by phone and have a resignation letter saved and attached to an e-mail all ready to send, or simply e-mail it and include a very brief greeting in your e-mail. The 2 week notice is the standard you should not break. The presentation of the resignation letter is much more flexible.

Write a formal letter and send it certified mail. At a minimum, the letter should state your intention to resign, the last day you plan to work, and a reason for quitting. If it is appropriate, expressing gratitude for the time you spent with your current employer is a nice touch.

Send them a letter and that really should do the trick. Stuff like emails and calling...also work. If I want to avoid talking to the person because I don't want to be talked out of leaving then I just write them a letter saying when I am having my last day of work and also thank them for letting you work for them unless they were really mean, You may need them as a reference later on and you don't want to burn your bridges.
