I would very much appreciate intelligent, researched answers to this question. Quoting one scripture out of context is not going to convince me of what you are saying. The 'foxes have holes, and birds have nests but the Son of Man has no place to lay his head' argument to say he was poor is pulled WAY out of context. Jesus didn't have a permanant home, as he constantly traveled. You can compare this to the many missionaries who travel to different countries. They are also constantly traveling. It does NOT mean they are poor. If you can provide any historical evidence and scriptural evidence (in context, of course) on the economic status of Jesus, I will honor you with a Best Answer.

A "carpenter" is one translation . . . 'laborer' is another translation.

As a rabbi, he traveled and taught -- not really "preached," as much as taught a new way of reading scripture.

When he said he had nowhere to "lay his head," that was more in reference to that specific night, than his whole life.

On more than one occasion, he would return to his family home, before going back out on the road.

Jesus moved seamlessly from one economic class to another -- from the poor to the middle class, to the wealthy -- his message resonated with all of them.

Where he ran into conflict was with the ultra-wealthy religious leaders, his message of equality and his idea of God ran counter to their economic well-being. And so they supported his execution.

Godspeed.

When Jesus lived with his parents I guess you could say he was middle class, but once he went out into the world to deliver the message then he was poor in things of this world. Jesus and his disciples slept outside sometimes the people would give them shelter and food.Jesus went about teaching and healing and him nor the disciples took money.Matthew8;18 saids when Jesus saw the crowd around him he gave orders to cross to the other side of the lake. Then a teacher of the law came and said teacher i will follow you wherever you go Jesus replied foxes have holes and birds of the air have nest but the son of man has no place to lay his head.

does a rich person have to be born in a stable, among animals- I do not think so- if He had been materially rich, He would have been born in a palace, or at least a place other than a manger. He made Himself poor so that we could be rich- and again that is not material wealth I am referring too. You provide proof that He was anything but on the poor side of material wealth. When He was older before He was crucified for our sins- "He had no place to lay His Head."

He was a carpenter and also then a preacher. As a carpenter probably middle class. As a preacher, being at the mercy of others as he traveled, probably poor, unless he saved from his carpenter days. But Jesus WAS God manifested in the flesh. So, I'm sure he was smart enough to figure that out.

He was poor. When a man wanted to follow him, Jesus told them "Foxes have holes, and birds have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to sleep." Luke 9:58

Poor.

"The Son of Man has not a place to lay his head".

He was born in a hostel stable, and buried in a borrowed tomb. All He owned was literally the clothes on His back.
