What would you prefer in order for me to get me closer to my goal of trying to speak this language fluently? I have a book (as thick as the bible) in which I study........I also sometimes go to Spanish grocery stores to see whether they understand sentences I've learned on my own. I want a tutor but the funds are telling me "Hell no." lol Im currently in school and was thinking of taking the classes 7 days a week. What do you think?

Get 501 Spanish Verbs by Christopher Kendris. It is EXCELLENT. It also has idiomatic phrases.

Then get a phrase book like 1001 English Spanish Idioms. This will also help.

Start watching movies that you like in Spanish with English subtitles.

Start listening to the radio in Spanish.

Sleep with the TV on a Spanish channel. If you are a light sleeper, you'll get a consistent stream of subconscious Spanish the whole night, every night.

Go to the store and practice with the customers and the people. They will gladly help you.

If you work in a place with Spanish-speaking clients or customers, try to speak with them.

And finally, have patience.

Why don't you try associating yourself with the culture. Get some friends/boyfriend who speak the language. Honestly the only real way to learn the dialect is to be around it and the culture. Studying on your own is ok, but you have to hear it when it is spoken and speak it back a lot. Then before you know it, you will be speaking Spanish.

well ill tell you what, I am a native Spanish speaker and i learned a ton of English outside the US, however i certainly got better once i moved up here. i know you said getting a tutor was a no go due to $ so I'm assuming going abroad is on the same line. but let me tell you how i learned German!, while in College i met my gf who is German (like for real German, born and raised) and ever since i have taken a like for the language, its been 3 years now and i do understand conversational German and more. i guess what I'm trying to say is try to date someone that speaks Spanish :)

It's quite false it takes 45 years to learn spanish! Specially if you're taking lessons.
Going to that grocery store is a good proceeding, because you'll need spanish speakin people around you, BUT, many hispanics in the U.S.A., don't speak spanish but spanglish; and don't even realize. They even insist on saying they do speak it, so, look out!

Don't get a hispanic boyfriend (unless you like them). But it's badly true, you need someone to right you smoooothly, as soft as not to feel stupid; but don't start a relationship that could end up in real feelings, and don't jeopardize yourself to fall in love with someone after a green card!

You'll have to rehearse all you know in english in order to say/learn it in spanish.
You'll find different accents.
The royal spanish academy of the language, is famed to be infamous. No one likes it!

...And if you don't master a good spanish as soon as you can,
don't worry! It'll be good enough to be understandable.

My regards!
(E-mail me if you need to know whatever you don't find in a book.)
