I consider myself a deist, but that is a philosophy not a religion. As far as religion I am also Jewish, which includes a culture and basic moral code.

Things not amenable to proof or disproof are accepted (or rejected) as a Religion. Ergo, atheism qualifies. "Jewish" is an interesting word, as it at times includes race, nationality, culture, or religion, and seems to move around among them.

it rather is a vulnerable argument. i think of believers make an assertion that atheism is a concept gadget, basically like faith. That atheists are a collection who all believe the comparable and can consequently be contradicted as a collection. in this sort they are asserting that atheism is a concept/faith too, and consequently not greater nor much less valid that a non secular faith. inspite of the undeniable fact that, my retort is that i don't think that god does not exist, yet rather that i've got not got a reason to believe. not believing in pixies isn't a concept gadget, it rather is a scarcity of a concept gadget.

Christians can't live without religion.

Atheists can live without religion.

If anyone categorizes atheism as a religion, it would be the religious ones amongst us.

To answer your question, atheists do not consider their belief (or non-belief) system a religion.

Because people like to fit groups into their outlooks on labeling.

Many religious can't grasp not having a religion. Others do it to get a rise out of atheists. Just like those that claim atheists have a poor attitude due to (fear/jealousy/etc.) rather than due to religious oppression.

I guess it makes theists feel better. :)

They are most familiar with organized religions and are uncomfortable with beliefs that don't fit into that category?

I wish I knew, I'd get them to stop.

Because atheism is based on the unproven, untestable, faith based RELIGIOUS assumption that no supernatural element exists.

Ironically it helps theists to attribute the derogatory aspects of religion to atheists. It's not fooling anyone who hadn't already made up their mind one way or the other.

Irony: They attempt to compare us to themselves, in attempt to discredit us.

It's a legalistic maneuver, so they can attack anything that seems "atheistic" from being in public schools.
