english cukes are long and thin..are not tough and mostly seedless.

cucumbers for salads are about 5-7 inches sometimes very thick. they can be hard and bitter if picked to early.

pickling cukes are small 3-5 inches and make great pickles and are also good on salads.

Christopher nailed it. The only thing I can add is the fact that some people who can't eat regular cucumbers because of burping as a side-effect, aren't bothered by English cucumbers. Hope that helps.

Like the last person answered, English cucumbers are long and thin. They are also sweeter than the others you'll find in the supermarket. They are what I prefer on salads and to eat plain because there's no 'bite' from the taste of them.

The English cucumber is seedless and therefore, is less irritating to the stomach/intestines ( gas ).
