St. Franc - there you are being cranky again. I think you are jealous that you didn't think of these questions first.

The bible is never an idol.

The word is food for the soul, Matt.6:9-13; 22:37-40; it is the word of God, Jesus was the word made flesh to dwelt among men. Eph.3:19; 4:13;
Education, wisdom, knowledge, Philip. 2:5,9-12;
Eyes that can see and ears that can hear, Matt.13:15,16; understanding and focus, able to grasp the truth and the facts and solve the math, [ Dan.9:2,24-27]; give the book all the life it has and deserves [ 2Tim.3:1-7; not as these not able to learn the truth ].
All the history and time that it covers [ 1Thes.5:1-9,21; To children of the light of times and seasons, Jesus does not come as a thief in the night at his 2nd coming ]; and really know what God wants us to know.

There is going to be a judgement day for [ all mankind ], the offsprings of Adam, all ever having had life, Heb.9:27; 2Cor.5:10; Rom.14:9-12; Acts 17:31; can any person be judged if he does not know the word of God.

Heb.4:12; the word of life, Matt.4:4 [ Man shall not live by bread alone, but every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God ]; the word of truth, John 8:32; 12:47,48; 17:17;

When one puts the bible before God. When one would twist the scriptures to justify their actions. Or use just one 'perfect' translation and deem all others wrong or Satan-inspired. When a person clings to the bible but limits God. Many people who believe in God think they have God pegged and fully understood because the bible says this and that. Yet these same people forget the though the bible may be inspired writing it is none the less written by men who are limited in their understanding and expression.

But that is just my opinion.

From the way it is referred to, almost immediately, IMHO.

As long as the dominant paradigm is belief (it's written in the Bible so it must be true), as opposed to comparative value based on results (compassion for others) then I don't see a way around the Bible functioning as an idol.

Any time someone uses the Bible as a justification for harming, oppressing, or simply not using their own intelligence and good sense to examine and think for themselves, then the Bible has, for them, become an idol.

Peace,

;-)

When it is used in a court setting as a book to swear on and using the words: " I swear to tell the truth...etc".though I am not sure if the bible is still used this way in some countries, as a tool to swear upon. I think ones word to tell the truth should taken as just that and not with a hand upon the bible to uphold this agreement. -Mt 5:37. Also when a person holds the bible in the same way as an object of adoration to bring them comfort. My dear sweet grandmother whenever she was upset would go straight to her bible and hold it close to herself just for comfort. She felt she was closer to God when she held the bible. Nothing wrong with that, but I thought it would be more practical to read inside to find comfort in times of distress. I also knew someone who had a special place in their homes where an old bible sat on a stand on open display. Asked if I could look inside, they said no, this one was not to be read as it was there only for display. Could this be considered an object of idolatry!? Possibly.

God says not to put any other god before Him. When a person pronounces the Bible inerrant, infallible and perfect, it becomes an idol. Nothing man-made is inerrant, infallible and perfect. Only God is inerrant, infallible and perfect. This is why God sends the Holy Spirit to help us discern what is right and wrong instead of receiving a Bible from God in the mail.

When it's placed as equal to God.

I've often wondered what people would do if God did something that was contrary to how they interpreted the Bible... would they whip it out and say "But You said RIGHT HERE!!!!...." =)

Chris "Jesus is called the Word of God. If someone contradicts the Bible, then they are wrong" Do you have any idea how much of a contradicton this is? Would you please read the preview of your answers before you hit submit... you damn near called the Bible Jesus Christ in this sentence.

People say that God is love, which Scripture bears out. But Scripture also says that God commands the annihilation of entire people groups, which most people would not consider loving. Yet people insist on clinging to the stories of God commanding genocide precisely because it's in the Scriptures.

That's what bible-olatry means. It's about believing more in the stories than believing in the God of the stories.

When you worship the book itself instead of acknowledging the fact that God gave us the Bible to use as a reference. Always remember that God is the one to worship @ just be thankful that He has given the Bible to help guide us, not to take away from Himself in anyway. God Bless :)

It is when we are more concerned about theology than we are about a relationship with the Lord and savior. It is when people are more concerned about knowing what it says in the Greek than they are in doing what it says in English. Knowing the Greek is a good thing, but knowing Jesus needs to be the priority.
