All strains are sativas. Indicas are shorter, more potent substrains originating in cooler mountainous areas, most notably Afghanistan.

Canonically there are two species of marijuana, Cannabis sativa and Cannabis indica. However, they can be cross-bred, and in fact many hybrid strains of sativa and indica exist. In both strains, the flowering buds are smoked - no one ever smokes the leaves, they simply don't contain enough THC.

Sativus means deliberately planted or cultivated. Use of this as the species name implies it is not a wild type cutivar, it was developed in cultivation. Avena sativa are oats.
Indicus (or indicum) means the species is from India or the Far East. The Barbary fig is Opuntia ficus-indica.
These are both species terms used to differentiate members of a genus. Botanical Latin gives greater specificity for accurate plant identification than most common names.

Both are cannabis - one is weed (smoke the leaves), one is skunk (smoke the flowerhead).
Edit for the pedant directly below; weed (indica) is closer to 'original' pot; it's a hardier, lower yield, and more often grown outdoors. Whilst there is a certain amount of flowerhead in bog-standard compressed weed, there is generally also a good deal of leaf, stem, seed, etc. They more or less just grab the top half of the plant, press it, dry it, and sell it. It's certainly not pure flowerhead, a la skunk, which is why it costs about 80 quid less per ounce. Skunk (sativa) is a refined strain, a good deal more delicate, much higher yeild, and is generally grown indoors, under lights.
