My kitty Simba has been sneezing for a few days. Yesterday I noticed that she had a runny nose and today, her eyes are draining quite a bit. She isn't as energetic as usual and seems uninterested in doing things she usually loves to do. Could she have a kitty cold? I think she has an appointment for shots in one or two weeks but should I move up the appointment and get her into a vet? She seems miserable! How can I make her more comfortable?

Thanks :)

Yes, move up the appointment with the vet and take her in. URIs (Upper Respiratory Infections) in cats are often viral, yes, and viral infections do not respond to antibiotics, BUT URIs often quickly become bacterial infections and you vet may recommend putting her on an antibiotic to ensure that this does not become a problem for her.

Even if the vet will not give her antibiotics, he/she will be able to tell you specifically what to be on the lookout for, and how to help make her more comfortable for the duration of her cold.

Oh, and you'll have to wait for her to be completely better before she should have her vaccinations. Good luck, I hope that she feels better soon :)

My cats usually go through this when we move. The first time I took them to the vet all worried and $150 later they told me that it was viral and they could not do anything to get rid of it, but did give me a perscription to prevent any secondary infections--another $50. I am NOT all about the money, but $200 is a lot for something that is not really needed.

So the next time one of my cats got the viral onfection (sneezing, etc...) I watched her close to be sure that she was eating and drinking water, had plenty of space to rest by herself and gave her two weeks. If she had not been better or had gotten worse then I would have taken her in.

Bottom line, after about a week - 10 days she was back to her normal self. As they do, the virus had worked its way through her system and she was fine. No need for an expensive vet visit or to give her antibiotics that only make her more resistent to future problems.

I say, keep an eye on her. Make sure that she is eating (probably less than usual, as we all do when sick) drinking water, and getting rest. Make sure thay she can breathe and that she is not laboring to get out a breathe. If after about 10 days - 2 weeks she is still sneezy and snotty then take her in as she may have developed somthing more serious than a cold.

It depends on how much sneezing is going on. It is common for kittens to sneeze a bit but this will not last for days on end. If the litter box is normal, then it is not an emergency. I got two kittens, and they were checked immediately by the vet with a clear bill of health. Several days later, they were sneezing, but that stopped several days later. But the coughing is a concern. Cats are masters at hiding problems. I would take her to the vet to make sure and give you peace of mind. I don't think it is an emergency, and if she does have a cold, the antibiotics are cheap. Just make sure to follow any vet instructions as far as the full course of treatment. A cold is a viral infection, but antibiotics are given to reduce any bacterial complications.

My two kittens had the same problem a couple weeks ago. I took them to the vet and they were put on amoxy drops twice a day. I was told that the cold will have to clear up on its own, but the amoxy was given to prevent and secondary infections. Also, if her nose gets so stopped up that she can't breathe like my kittens did, I was told to buy some saline nose drops and give it to them every couple hours, it cleared their noses immediately.

Take her to the vet. She probably is miserable and doesn't feel good. As for making her feel better, all you can really do is pet her and make her feel relaxed. Just baby her for a few days until you can get her the medicine that she needs.

I would move up the appointment. She may very well need an antibiotic. And if she is sick at the vaccine appointment, they will not vaccinate her anyway, so you will still have to make another trip.
