I am having a baby in December, and most of my extended family lives in Canada. I am thinking of taking a trip up there while I am on maternity leave, and it just occured to me that I don't know if the baby will need a passport or not. Can someone answer this for me?

If you drive into Canada bring the birth certificate, if you fly, you must have a passport, regardless of age. For yourself you will need a photo ID plus proof of citizenship such as a green card or birth certificate.

Look at my source.

The biggest concerns with kids are their safety and kidnapping. If a little older than yours, a secondary issue is runaways. So, the security standard is actually higher for babies than adults.

Your child will need the same documentation as you. If you are going by land or sea you don't need passports, but you will need the baby's birth certificate. If you are flying you both need passports.

If you are traveling alone, and have both parents listed on the birth certificate, you will need written and signed permission from the father.
