how would I do it? I'd like to come for a visit but don't want to be messed with. I know I'll look like I don't belong but I want people to think I'm a cop or something. What do I do? How do I act?

You are a fool.

If you really wanted to look like an undercover cop, you'd go as you are. If you want to look like a fake undercover cop, though, have fun. New Yorkers tend to be a little too street-savvy to be fooled by that.

(If you want to do the latter, make sure you have a will and a living will on file before you make your visit. You never know when they'll need 'em.)

I wouldn't recommend doing it but here's a few tips.

Wear a baseball cap, and glasses. Wear a blue windbreaker slightly unzipped. Wear a lanyard around your neck that goes under the Windbreaker. Wear sunglasses during the day. Buy an earpiece that has a transparent tube that connects to a radio, run the earpiece under your jacket. Wear a sleeveless sweatshirt under a tshirt that is concealed by the windbreaker, this will give a bit of bulk to you and make it appear that you're wearing a vest. Keep your head on a swivil, never look at the ground, observe everybody around you. If somebody looks suspicious don't look away from them, make eye contact. NYC is a pretty safe place, you should be fine without doing any of this.

You have clearly watched too many movies.
If you don't want to get messed with...well, I'm a gangly whiteboy from small-town Minnesota, who looks and sounds like it, and I was in NY for a week and nobody messed with me, even in Harlem. So unless you're going to seedy bars and stuff, you probably shouldn't worry.

Since good undercover cops probably don't look like undercover cops, the only way to look identifiably like one is to look like an obviously fake one, which might actually be a good way to get your butt kicked.

You can visit NYC with being messed around with. If you do come to NYC and walk around like a UC then when they catch you, you'll do some time for impersonating a Police Officer. In some areas if they think that your a UC then gonna mess with you.

If your desire is not to be messed with, look like you belong. Wear black, for one. Avoid overly bright colors. If you're traveling with someone, don't do the matching game.

Know where you are and where you're going. Keep a SMALL subway map with you and be discreet when you peek at it. Walk briskly and confidently. Most of NYC is fairly easy to figure out--numbered east-west streets and north-south avenues. It's just south of 14th Street and the Village (don't say Greenwich Village) that all the streets get fercockta. And Houston is not pronounced like the Texas city, but Hows-ton.

The numbering system of the avenues is also nutty, so if you're going to a place with an address on an avenue, make sure you have a cross street. And like in many cities, streets change names as you travel along them. Don't panic.

You do that... get a fake badge, hang it around your neck on a chain, wear a day's growth of beard and sunglasses. Start following people around. When they ask why, flip out the fake badge.

See how long it takes you to be busted by a real cop in a city that is always on the lookout for terrorists and others like them. Enjoy Riker's Island.

If your objective is not to be messed with then why don't you just look, act and smell like homeless person .We can all guarantee you that almost nobody will mess with you . There is no law against impersonating a homeless person however there is a law against impersonating a cop
Have fun

Impersonating a cop is illegal and dangerously. You might get shot then if a punk thinks you'r a cop for their gang initiation.

Besides, a UC is suppose to blend in so just be you and keep your nose clean.
