We'd still have missiles in Turkey aimed at strategic targets in the Ukraine and other southeastern portions of what was the USSR. The Soviets weren't about to launch a strike, they may be obtuse, but they aren't stupid.

Well, for starters, this conversation would not be happening. I was a child living just outside the District of Columbia during the Missile Crisis. Can YOU say "Ground Zero"? At the very least the missiles in Cuba would have flown. If it had gone to total release, which is the most-likely probability, this world would still be recovering. (See "Nuclear winter")

With Mutually Assured Destruction as a policy, we would not be here to discuss this question.
the U.S.S.R. did back down though, so we lived to hide under our desks every time the alarm sounded.

There were concessions made on both sides. Had it turned into a nuclear war, well, you wouldn't be asking this question, and I wouldn't be answering.
