Well, Narcotics Anonymous for drug abuse issues and Alchoholics Anonymous for alcohol related issues. They are both resources. There isn't really an age limit that I know of.

As one person said, Narcotics Anonymous can be very helpful, but the teen must be ready to try to give up the drugs, otherwise it's most likely a waste of time. So, I wouldn't suggest any type of coercian or force in getting the teen to go.

I can only tell you that in northeast Georgia there is a large agency that handles all of that for people who don't have insurance. They get funded by the state and federal govt. I would highly expect that all areas of the country have similar agencies. I would just do a search using the state's name along with the words, "mental health", and you should be able to reach a few sites that will guide you in the right direction.

And Al-Ateen is NOT for teens with substance abuse problems. It is for teens who are affected by a loved one or someone real close who has the drug problem, so that the teen can deal with being in the drug addict's life. It's the kids' group similar to Al-Anon.

Your Public Health Dept will help you, at any age, to find the proper resources that you are looking for. Many clinics offer substance abuse programs for those trying to get out of that.........if the Clinic has the H.A.R.M. project, it is the Reduce the Harm program that will help you. Usually, these clinics offer mental health help as well. The costs are based on how much money you make, so if you are a teen without any money, it would be free.

Define substance abuse.

Is he/she taking Lysol up the nose? Is he/she huffing Ready-Whip cans?

If you mean your kid is hooked on drugs or alcohol, just say so!

If you take your kid to any of those places, you will become a suspected child abuser for failing to protect your child from drugs and alcohol. Then they will not allow you see your child because of "child protective services" rules.

If you want your kid to be weaned from drugs, try the movie "Scared Straight". Or take him/her to the local jail/prison for a visit to shake some sense into him/her.

If it's an issue with just pot and beer, let it go. It's just a phase and they should outgrow it soon after graduation from H.S. If not, they'll be 18 and you can set them free.

If it's a coke/smack problem, then you have issues and should seek a drug-anonymous place (similar to AA); they are peers who can provide the best assistance without the stigma of John Law looking at your parenting skills.

These days, there are dual diagnosis facilities out there for people who have drug and alcohol issues + mental illness issues.

You should also know that most addicts have mental health problems in the first place.

Call your local hospital or mental health clinic(s) for more information.

Al-ateen . . . for one. It's hard to say without an idea of what part of the country/globe you are in.
