Modern theories say it was CO2 from a nearby volcanic eruption. Firstborn were special and slept down on the floor while subsequent children slept up in a loft. Just one theory though, but the best I have heard.

it was pheroh at the era of birth of our messenger Moses.
Pheroh told people that he is their God and they have to worship him.
i don't know the story exactly but i think ,
he dreamed or someone of those who make horoscope told him that there will be a boy born and he will destroy you .
so ,he ordered that every baby boy born must be killed.
when they heared that mother of Moses has a child they went to her but the God inspired to the mother of moses to put him in a box and put him in the riverand don't worry ,he will be back to you.
then the river took him to the palace of pheroh and his wife saw him and she has no sons and she liked him and asked her husband to keep him, the God make them love the child and keep him, his mother asked his sister to follow the box in the river and see where it will stop or its fate , Moses the baby needed a woman to suckling him and he refused all women and his sister went to them and said that she know a woman that can help them and his mother went to him back.
