Religious people live for their God, not their country. God comes first in their lives, their country is insignificant compared to God. When they feel like someone is putting their God down, they become very defensive. And yes because The US is mainly a religious country, the majority is going to want a religious leader, who they think has more morals than an atheist would have. When atheism becomes the dominant "religious" belief, all that will change, it will take some time though, patience.

Because atheists DISOWN their creator God !
I respect your Granny because she loves you so much she is scared about your precious soul. She is a matured person and she knows the gravity of denying God.
You say "i find myself being persecuted a lot more than people with religious background. also there are those church people that come to my house and "invite" me to go to their church and try to convince me that i will not be happy without god."_My dear! this not persecution.Consider yourself lucky to have such people ! If this you consider as persecution I don't think you will stand up against the real persecution.
As you say "religion is sposed to be about love and forgivness" I say it is.You are being loved and sure to be forgiven (by God and man.)
Though I don't know you in person yet my heart goes for you !Why should you go to Hell ? Go to church . Have a closer walk with Him , because these are the end times !Hell is real and and don't miss the golden opportunity !

When it comes to religion, there has always been a religious superiority in people. The people in one religion will believe that their religion is the right one and anyone who chooses differently is wrong. With the attitude towards atheists, that is particularly true. The religious people are shocked to believe that someone is not only not choosing their religion, they don't even believe that a god exists. That threatens some people. It makes some people even question their own beliefs. If it is possible for one person to not believe in a god then it is possible for many to not believe in a god.
Currently, the atheist population in the US is around 10%. Well, that is atheist and agnostic combined. Those numbers are going up. There will always be discrimination but it will get better.

i do no longer think Atheists hate usa. They hate being preached all the way down to and desire to make certain a mundane society no longer ruled with the aid of Christian concept. regrettably their desire would come genuine with the ordinary unintentional effects, this time being their emancipation from faith via subjugation with the aid of the Communist chinese language. I hear that Beijing's effective Committee does not look kindly upon something based onworshipp of something different than the state. As such, the perfection of the (chinese language) wall between faith andgovernmentt could be attained.

Sorry about your grandma. I used to be a fundie. They shun non Xians out of fear. My family disowned me at first. My dad never did, but my mom and brother did. I let it be their problem and didn't offer any contact with them. Eventually they started calling and wanting to see me. It took several years, but they did come around. Good luck to you. I know it's no help, but you aren't alone. I am truly sorry for the way your family is doing you. Hang in there and be true to yourself and things will change.
I was very fortunate to have the grandma I had. She didn't care if you ate frogs and farted out tacos. lol She loved me no matter what. She didn't measure people by their religion. She hated religion. I really miss her.

Possibly for the same reason America ignores spelling and grammar.
Aside from that, please bear in mind that your grandma is not religion in its entirety, nor is she all of America. Your grandma's behavior is strictly your grandma's behavior, and does not necessarily reflect religion or America.
The behavior is one person is too small a sample from which to draw conclusions.
