If my doctor told me not to eat bacon butties now I would think he was loopy - he never gives advice like this unless it is a real risk to health such as sugar is to diabetics. Pretty soon we will alll be living on fruit and nuts, probably they will find something wrong with veggies too, does anybody else here get blooooody fed up (as if) with these food scares in the papers every day. God almighty half the worlds population is starving what more can I say? Does anybody in the world know the perfect diet for health? Seems the experts don't know and confuse us if we were to take it all on board. Eat, drink and be merry I say !!!!!

I agree. I'm vegetarian so I don't eat bacon butties, but if people want to eat them they ruddy well should do. I believe it's not WHAT people eat, it's how MUCH they eat. Eat too much of any food and it'll be bad for you. Too much fruit can make you overweight if it contains more than your daily calorific needs.
A recent report says that obesity in women can cause cancer. I've known of 4 women who've had cancer and only 1 was overweight. Another one was a very slim non-smoker, and she died of lung cancer!
I think some of these experts are talking out of their rear-ends and just want their 15 minutes of fame.

In our modern, technological, fast-paced world, the demand for ready-to-eat foods has so pervaded our lifestyles that many of us would starve if we found ourselves marooned on a working farm! ;)

No diet is "perfect" for everyone, mostly due to exactly what your question stated: instinct and joy. You might like brussel sprouts, but I don't! Of course, other factors come into play, such as allergies, diabetes, ulcers, etc, but, arguably, many of these were caused by our lifestyles and poor eating habits (and, BTW, many people can't eat fruits and nuts!).

There is also a knee-jerk response to good or bad foods reported in the media. For example, the American Medical Association never said that "oat bran" was a panacea; all they said was that EVIDENCE was found to INDICATE that eating such ALONG WITH other foods COULD help people maintain a healthiER diet! Of course, the only thing that got to the media (and then to us!) was "OAT BRAN GOOD!" Now, the current drumbeat is "DARK CHOCOLATE RULES!", which, of course, it *does* , but not to the point that people should scarf it down by the pound!!! And what about spending $5 for a 25 cent cup of coffee? Somebody, PLEASE explain that phenomenon to me!!! More examples: The recent spinach scare cost millions to spinach growers, even though the fault was (allegedly) due to a single farm, and only a small batch! Remember the Chilean grape scare from a few years ago? ONE bunch (not a bushel, not a crate, not a truckload . . . just a single *BUNCH*!) of grapes had something wrong with it (I don't even remember what it was), and that entire country's grape farms suffered for it! Ludicrous! Meanwhile, millions of toys with lead paint are passing through customs with nary a first, much less second, look!

As for the starving masses, again, much of that is due to modern technology devastating the planet's natural rain cycles. Of course, wars contribute a great deal, as well: a recent documentary on PBS showed an Iraqi woman growing poppies for eventual sale to drug lords, because it is far more lucrative than growing, say, potatoes; the fields were burned, of course, but now she has no income and is treated derisively by her neighbors (granted, they probably knew about the stuff, but they have to act the part, or be punished as well; I'll also grant that the whole thing may have been staged by or for the documentary, but, we'll never know about that, admittedly cynical, possibility).

So, be grateful for what you have (and by "you" I mean everyone, not just the asker), take only what you absolutely need (that goes for anything, not just food), don't waste anything (again, not just food!), and don't sweat about the rest, especially of what you have no control!

IMHO, the best diet is whatever agrees with you (and your medical history, of course), and everything in moderation!
Either that or we should all live on what nature gave us: Rocks, trees, clouds . . . ;)

In this regard, the British have it right when they end their conversations with the word, "Cheers!" ;)

P.S. One should not use the phrase "fed up" when discussing food! ;)

Wow! With all these long answers I'm almost afraid to touch this one. However, I agree. I eat healthy at home. I love baked potatoes, oatmeal, dried fruits, fresh veggies, dark breads... but with all except the fruits I put real butter on it. When I go out, which is only once a month, I go to a 'real' restaurant and have a delicious meal, not to a fast-food place. I love everything I eat, or I won't eat it. I also run but for the fun or it, and live in a small town, so I don't drive, I walk everywhere. My choice. I get to see my friends that way. Damn, I didn't want my answer to be so long, sorry. Do whatever you want, but enjoy what you eat.

I generally think that it is because of all of the artificial crap that is being put into food these days. I grew up in the 1970's and I never started hearing of all of these exotic diseases and disorders until the mid to late 80's. I am going to make a long sermon short here. I will eat and drink as I damn well please. I eat rare steak 3 times a week with baked potatoes and brocolli with lots of cheese sauce. I wash it down with 114 proof Old Grand Dad. I lift weights and I am in better condition than a lot of people that are 10 years younger than I am. I am 43 by the way. We are ALL going to DIE one day. There is no getting around it. I agree with you 100% Let's eat drink and be merry while we can!!!

eating healthy is not rocket science.

human beings are designed to ingest foods grown in soil and the flesh from animals and fish. starting with the Industrial Revolution humans in advanced society's are consuming less natural foods and more processed foods which is exactly the cause of all of the health problems today. these foods have a very negative effect on the endocrine system and the endocrine system governs the human body. processed carbohydrates and foods laden with various chemicals should be consumed at the bare minimum "if" optimum health and fitness is your concern. there used to be a time when great amounts of energy where expended just to get food when man was a hunter and gatherer, now high calorie foods can be obtained while expended no energy what soever. when combined with the sedentary lifestyles of the average human today in places like the US failing health could only be the end result.

The perfect healthy diet is a varied one with a bit of everything going. Not all at once I may add but over a period of time. To take an example there is nothing wrong with going to McDonald's for a BIG MAC and fries but going three times a week is silly

The problem isn't bacon butties - it's bacon butties everyday, then sitting on your backside at an office chair that causes the issues.

Everything in moderation, I say. That way I'll have all these lovely things, but live to see my son grow up...

Simply eat what you like but try and keep some balance in it, a reasonable amount of fruit and veg etc and don't eat so much that it makes you fat! That's all there is to it, that's all we need to know and yes, i'm also sick to my back teeth of interfering politicians and so called experts sticking their noses in. Most of them don't know what their talking about (especially politicians) who just want to look like their earning their over inflated wages, bring on the Revolution!!!
