My friend is feeling realy down because she went to an interview with AirTran and was not given a second interview. She said all the flight attendants and admin. where white and only white people got called back into the other room for a second interview. Is AirTran racist? Or is this just a fluke?

Okay! A lot of anger out there. First of all she didn't say they were racist, she just described the people who where there. She is going to try again for the job because she is very optimistic and will perservere. I just didn't want her to be taking the time to reapply if there was a blatant history of it. Some companies, especially in Oklahoma, just won't hire certain people. I was told outright that I wouldn't get a job because I am an unattached female and that would make me "unstable" and "unreliable" as a worker. They would prefer if I got married first. People are strange. I appologize for not elaborating before.

Oh, and that comment about wanting me to be an "attached" female did not come from the airline but several other companies.

If you feel you were mistreated you should contact the EEOC (equal employment opportunity commission). Assuming you were qualified for the position the EEOC can help you figure it out.

I have flown AirTran and I have had African-American flight attendents, and I have seen all sorts of non-white employees working for them, so I would probably say that the company itself is not racist.

You have to ask yourself if your friend was completely qualified, had a good interview, was completely honest, had references and job history that were verifiable. Some people just interview very poorly.

If the company was mostly African-American and your friend was white, would you be asking the same question?

If she was TRULY qualified for the job and was overlooked, then you should contact a EEOC office.

But, if she was only looking for a job and did not have the correct qualifications or abilities, then she was simply told "No Thanks" and needs to look elsewhere for employment. Every time someone of color is passed over for a job, it is not necessarily racism.

Have you ever flown Airtran? I fly them on a regular basis and I have seen a very diverse group of people represented by their cabin-crews and the Pilot groups. They have several African-American flight attendants and other minorities working throughout the company.

I seriously doubt your friend was turned away because of her race or ethnic origin.

Based on what you say, it is really not possible to tell. You would have to see a pattern from a lot of hiring sessions before you can make that call. It might be possible that the best people for the job there that day were white. Tomorrow, the best people for the job might all be black and they all get hired. You have to see a pattern from a lot of situations rather than from a single situation before you can make that call.

Now, if a lot of people came forward and said that this happened to them when they tried to be hired, then an investigation into the hiring practices of the company is in order. Then it will become apparant if they are racially discriminating in their hiring practices.

We don't have enough information to verify that the airline company is racist. It takes qualified and polite individuals to be flight attendants. Usually, the best candidates get second interviews and get hired. Maybe your friend isn't qualified enough, maybe she didn't do so well in the interview process or that she is inexperienced. But to jump up and said that it is racist without solid evidence is unfair to Air Tran.

I think you and your friend are racists. How does your friend know that ONLY white people were called back...did she take a poll of everyone the airline interviewed for the position? Maybe, just maybe, your friend wasn't qualified and that is the reason she didn't get a call back...STOP PLAYING THE RACE CARD EVERYTIME THINGS DON'T GO YOUR WAY!!!

Just because she isn't good enough does not mean she has to throw out the racist to make up for her incompentance, it could that those people are meeting the standards and just happen to be white.

I seriously doubt the airline is racist. Your friend was just not qualified. She should not blame others because she doesnt have the right experience.
