They have about the same kind of biological clock we do. It can be tricked, and messed up because it's environmentally responsive.
Cats are creatures of habit. If you want to stop her from yowling at you when she thinks you're supposed to wake up, don't give her a reason to. Don't feed her or give her as much attention right when you wake up, so she doesn't feel rewarded for doing it (nothing beyond a friendly pat, then walk away).
Interestingly, their perception of time is thought to be faster, also, so we seem to move very slowly to them! = )

At night, I used to think they keep track of time by using some external clues - such as when trains go by in the distance, when the first birds start chirping. when some cats or raccoons in the neighborhood make their rounds. What a smart cat you have. She has you covered. My two started getting up earlier every morning, in order to get fed and let out, so I had to put them lovingly in the basement a few times. I don't appreciate getting up at 4 AM to do that. Now, they are a bit confused by the time change. How is your kitty reacting to that? It would provide some evidence that she does have a very good internal clock.

My cats wake me up about 10 minutes before my alarm goes off. One attacks my feet and the other jumps on my chest and yowls at my face.
There were times that I would have been late to work (due to me forgetting to set the alarm, or something) had they not woken me up.
I wonder if they plan it together XD

My cat knows when It's breakfast time for sure!
I should have thought they have some kind of biological clock like big cats in the wild. Wild animals have to know the best times to hunt, sleep and move on according to times of the day. Don't know if this is done with a biological clock or the amount of daylight?

I had a cat that liked to watch a certain show on Animal planet and every time that it was time for this show to come on the cat would start pawing me, meowing and looking at the TV. So I know cats can tell time somehow. This also shows that cats do watch TV, which some "experts" tell us that cats do not do.

I had a cat that loved curling up with me in bed. Of all the days of the week, Saturday is the only day I'd take a nap midday (after lunch).. anyway.. she seemed to absolutely know when it was Saturday naptime.. but there could have been alot of other things tipping her off as well..

yes they have. Mine do the same, and if they want a cuddle, will crawl under the quilt ten minutes or so before the alarm goes off :-)
They also know when it is the weekend and let me sleep in an hour or so - I think that is VERY clever :-)

My cat knows when it's dinner time, she comes looking for food at about 5pm each day (give or take 15 minutes), amazingly even when the clocks went back, there she was about 5pm looking for dinner, weird!

Of course they can tell time. My cat knows when I should be up in the morning and she knows when it's time for her to eat. If I am not getting up or feeding her at the appropriate time then she feels that she must help me. It's amazing and annoying at the same time.
