My wife and I love sushi especially the rolled maki type and would like to try to make it at home.

Unless you are really into eating allot of sushi, I would suggest that you stick with just going out for it. It's seems that it's and event that you and your wife enjoys. It's too expensive and difficult to locate the high quality materials.

Buy a sushi-making "kit" at World Market, or gourmet-type grocery stores. It in will be the mat, seaweed noori, dipping bowls, chopsticks, etc.

Use sushi rice (not regular long grain!) and get it cold. To keep it from sticking to yoru hands, dip hands in water.

The best thing is just get in there and give it a try! You will get better the more you do it.

Making sushi is something great, but I suggest you try and find some course you can do close to your house. Many cooking schools have them, as it has become quite fashionable. There you can find all you need, suited for the place where you live. Some of the ingredients can be very hard to find/expensive. Good Luck!

Any international food market (google or use your yellow pages) should have everything you need:

Sushi rice
Seaweed wraps
Sushi matt

those are the basics. Everything else is up to you. I like to mix cultures:

avacado + smoked salmon + wasabi is my favorite combination.
