This was something you should have done BEFORE you purchased this dog!

here are some sites about this breed.
http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanpitbull.htm
http://www.bulldogbreeds.com/americanpitbullterrier.html
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Pit_Bull_Terrier

also...is your pit a papered dog? AKC registered as an APBT? (American Pit Bull Terrier)
the term Pit Bull is used for MANY of the bully breeds, not just the APBT. if you bought this dog from an owner that just called it a "pit bull" it could be a mutt really.

next time..RESEARCH before you buy ANY dog.

If it's a puppy, introduce it to various surroundings. Walk it around the park, or places that are filled with little kids and probably other dogs. Keep it on a tight leash, should it become aggresive.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to train your dog basic commands. Not just pit bulls, but any dog! Your dog is your responsibility. Dogs are a joy, but a lot of work
Good Luck!

You should remember to research a breed before you buy/adopt it, it saves a lot of hassle.

Well-bred American Pit Bull Terriers (APBTs) are wonderful with children, they naturally click and become great friends. Younger children tend to pull tails and ears and annoy dogs, but APBTs are very tolerant of all this and usually don't mind. I was raised since the day I was born with many different APBTs from many different places (from breeders, shelters, rescues), and I don't ever remember having one become aggressive towards me.

In general, APBTs don't deal well with other dogs. There are, however, exceptions to that rule as more and more good breeders breed APBTs that are tolerant of other animals vs. those who aren't. APBTs were made to be dog-aggressive and some have still kept that dog-aggression. Also, it's not usually a good idea putting a very tiny toy dog and an APBT in the same household - APBTs have a very high prey drive and will usually chase around anything smaller than them.

APBTs are the epitome of love and loyalty. Good luck with your new companion!

Pit bulls get very attached to their owners but have a sweet disposition. As long as you stop them whenever they begin an agressive behavior you will be fine.

The problem with pit bulls is that people are scared of them. People are scared of them and then whenever people encounter pit bulls the dogs usually get excited at the prospect of a new friend and chase them and knock them down. I have yet to see a pit bull who hasn't knocked at least one person down, so you need to watch out for that.

Well, ideally you would have learned all that before getting the dog. Now, you will need to educate yourself as quickly as possible, and there's far too much to be learned to cram into one Y/A. You need to read as much as you can about the breed itself, about training dogs, about socializing dogs, caring for dogs and so forth. I would start at the local library, visit the nearest bookstore, or look online at http://www.dogwise.com for books that might help you. There ar a lot of online resources. If you do a web search on pit bulls for example, you'll turn up tons of links. Most of them are probably pretty worthless, but if you dig around you can find some useful information.

Two important aspects of being a successful owner of any breed is to properly socialize and to obedience train your dog. It's particularly important with a dog like yours. They are basically great dogs, but have to be handled properly. When dogs like pbs get into trouble, It's almost always because the owner deliberately trained them to be aggressive, abused them, or just didn't know what they were doing.

If you have a local kennel club or obedience training club, they usually have classes for dogs of all ages. Boarding kennels and pet supply stores frequently have classes, which are at least good for socialization. Finally, a professional trainer could help you with socialization of your dog, which is important with pbs.

Good luck with your pup.

Not to sound harsh, but these are the sort of questions you should ask before you get a dog....
Pit bulls can be wonderful dogs, but they are not for everyone. I used to raise pits, I had them before I had children, they were great with my kids, but they were also very well trained. My female got on fine with our cats, but generally hated the neighbors cats and would try to attack them if they came over the fence. My male had a tendancy to be dog aggressive, and I had to work with him a lot to get that under control to the point that I could take him back in the show ring. By and large, they were not great "watchdogs"- someone smashed our car window one night and stole a bunch of stuff, and the dogs never even barked. My recommendation with any large, powerful breed of dog is to get yourself off to puppy training right at 3 months of age so you learn how to properly handle the dog when they are still a manageable size. Continue with training beyond that point....level 1, level 2, etc. These are very intelligent dogs, eager to please, and easily trained once you know what you are doing. If you have a breed club in your area, join it. Those of us that love the breed are always willing to help newbies and be part of the solution. I had one litter of pups 20+ years ago, I bred my girl to a dog who at that time was the highest titled APBT in the country- he had all the UKC obedience titles, Schutzund III, and beyond. Good luck.

Don't you think you should have researched the breed BEFORE buying the dog???

I have owned two pit bull mixes and they can be a great dog. It all depends on YOU...the owner and how you train him/her. They are not NATURALLY vicious.

pit bulls are great dogs no matter what the rumors say. They are incredibly loyal. I have heard they have lock jaw but have never experienced it. Make sure you teach your dog the right things, like no biting and you should not have a problem.

Answer MY question first: Why didn't you research this BEFORE you got a pit bull. Question like these and people like you make me sick and don't feel bad about it! Books, websites. Pit Bulls can be good around kids and other dogs IF properly trained. Each everyone has their own different personalities. Please be a responsible owner and research on your dog breed.

They are wonderful dogs to have with kids. Your children will have no better playmate than a pit bull. They are very protective and can be dog aggressive. Socialize your dog alot and invest in obedience training.
