I recently got a male chocolate lab puppy, about 9 weeks old now. The people I bought him from said he had been dewormed once, one week before I got him. I brought him to the vet I work for this past monday (three days after I got him) for an exam and de-worming (with pyrantel). His stool sample was normal. He still has quite the pot belly. He is being fed a low residue vet diet, and the appropriate amount recommended by my vet. I should also add that he is a small lab, probably the runt of the litter. He weighs about 7.5 lbs right now. He came from a little of six pups, and his mom weighed around 50 lbs (at least this is what I was told by the people I got him from, whom did not own the parents.) He has another vet appt. in about 5 days for shots. Starting this morning he has been drinking and urinating a lot. What is going on? Anyone been through this? I am waiting to hear from my vet to see what she thinks, but I thought I would ask here as well.

Thats how puppies are built. He'll slim up sooner or later.
Kudos to you for feeding him a good dog food too. Most people opt for the grocery store garbage. Keep up the good work and best of luck to you and your puppy.

Puppies usually have a pot belly, but I'd have another stool sample checked just to be sure he doesn't still have worms.
You might also learn about pet food and how to read labels. Many of the foods sold contain too many grains (corn, wheat, bran, etc.) and this could be causing your pup to drink/urinate a lot. Go to a pet store that sells holistic food and ask for their advice on what to feed.

It may be a bladder infection...that causes them to urinate alot and if they are dehydrated they will drink alot....was the pup said to be healthy....runts usually always have some kind of a problem anyways because in most cases they don't get the right amount of nutrients and it slows down their development. another thing is that they say a puppy can only hold their bladder and eliminating for 1 hour for every month of age...example......3 month old puppy can hold potty for about 3 hours at a time.

Soda has a lot of sugar, and if you drink a lot of it you will be consuming more calories than you burn. Therefore, you will gain weight and get fat. As far as the pot belly, I'm not sure, but the carbonation can make your stomach stick out farther than it normally does.

It may be just how he's built. The dry food can make them more thirsty and honestly I think sometimes puppies just like to drink water just because it's there. It's worth mentioning to the vet but I would not be too alarmed as long as he's energetic, eating, drinking, pooping normally, etc.

your puppy reallys hould not be on diet food, i'm shocked a vets has allowed this. puppies get round pop tummies and they should have their puppy fat too, this will go when he starts to go for walks.
if he is on a complete dry food then it is understandable that he will drink more and the more he drinks the more he will need to pee.
I hope all is ok and he dont have a small infection, only your vet will be bale to tell you this.
best wishes

my dog did the same thing. He was perfectly fine, but he was a puppy and had a small blatter. whenever he would eat you could basically watch his stomach expand, until he wen to the bathroom and he would get smaller. Have you noticed a change like that?

He's just like a child the more he drinks the more he'll pee. Give him water when your feeding him until he learns to drink in moderation.
