I don't think you should have to have a significant income as long as you can provide the basic needs. Sure it's a struggle but as long as you're working hard and doing what you can, the kid(s) will turn out fine.

If a child is given unconditional love, a warm home and clean clothes then it will be a very happy one. Being a good mother and father is about spending time with your children, playing games and tellin stories, money doesnt buy love and happiness x

Everyone's idea of what is significant is different. It helps not to be worried about how you are going to feed or clothe or shelter your child. But I don't think that you have to have a lot of money to be a good parent. I know some people who do have lots of money and I think that they are not good parents. Just because your child is in kindergarten and wears designer clothes and has a razor cell phone doesn't make you a good parent. I'm trying to raise my children to know that money isn't everything. But I am still able to get them clothes or shoes when they outgrow them (or rip them) and we eat everyday. And our house is warm in winter and cool in summer. I think that I'm a good parent. My teen age daughter tells me I'm awesome. And most of her friends call me mom. We don't have lots of money. But I think we have everything we need.

As long as you have enough money for the child's basic needs, that is all that really matters. There are many people who spoil their kids with money and items, and yet, are HORRIBLE parents...Parenting is a learned skill, not something that is better with money.

well, yeah, you should have enough money to care for the kid. but that guy on the pursuit of happyness had nothing and was a good parent. it takes much more than money to be a good parent, but money is also a big part of taking care of the child.
