Hi....I am going to Brussels myself in March - cannot wait!
Don't be put off!
If you stick to the 'pretty' places you should be fine
The place with the market is called SABLON - you can look it up on the internet
I am going to buy some unusual small antiques while I'm out there - so it is going to be a shopping trip holiday!
With lots of chocolate and beer thrown in! lol
Enjoy! Apparantly there are loads of cafe's to choose from :-)

Hi - I visited Brussells for a bank holiday weekend and whilst I enjoyed myself I probably would not return. The outskirts of the town are horrible, look dirty and just give it a bad image. There did also seem to be a problem with drinking and homeless people and a lot of areas I walked through did smell bad.
However, once you get right into the centre it is actually a very nice place. Find the market square with the big cathedral and that is a great place to hang out and watch the world go by, there was some nice restaurants in the square but the best place we found was by wandering down the side streets.
I don't remember seeing a flea market but all the areas around the square had some great shops and there was lots of wandering to do and little pokey alleys with pretty shops. There are quite a few chocolate museums and we visited one and watched chocolate being made. Yummy!
You can visit the Mannikin Pis, but it is a tiny little fountain! Still it is part of the heritage so you have to go. They also have a lovely park by the palace which has some nice fountains and I found the palace fascinating, there were some amazing chandeliers in their.
Take a bus tour too, there is a strange building and I cannot remember the name but it is shaped like six little globes attached to straight lines, if you saw it you would know what it was instantly, apparently there is a restaurant in there but it was closed when we visited.
Just walk everywhere and you will find interesting stuff, (as it was a while ago I don't remember exactly where things are) but we found: beautiful big clock which chimed and had little people coming out of on the hour, fantastic Indian restaurant, really old and beautiful iron building, chinese building shaped like a big pagoda and in the financial district some real abstract shaped buildings.
I didn't have any duff meals whilst I was over there and the Indian was the best one by far. Good luck and have fun.

Brussels may be the capital of Belgium and may be the principal seat of the Belgian Royal Family and, also the capital of the European Union and if you intend to know it then here is the place hotelbye . Brussels is an amazingly little, easy-going, and human-sized city for many their importance. Unlike anthers town using their millions of tourists, Brussels is Belgium's principal economic and academic centre, which gives the town an even more workaday sense than other towns. Here, in Brussels, if you would decide to go to, you will get a correct experience for Belgian living, particularly their wonderful restaurant and café culture. Though Brussels may possibly not have the star attractions of other Belgian areas, the capital has plenty of to help keep readers entertained for a few days with a clutch of world-class museums and art galleries, in addition to quirkier views including the Atomium, and some amazing remnants of previous structure in the old city quarter.

It is a very nice city and I do remember the flea market which was on a Sunday, very big and in a large square (I forget the name). There were small and large stalls selling everything but there was also people standing about by lampposts and telephone boxes with a few items on the ground around them that seemed to be some odds and ends they happen to have at home.

If you like chocolates or biscuits you'll be in 7th heaven. Check out the traditional Dandoy biscuit shop in the centre - 31 Rue au Beurre. See link below.
Wandering about the streets and looking in the shops is actually one of the nicest things to do in Bruxelles. I won't mention sea life but if you like beer you should have a good time too, in any pub.
Sorry my answer is all about food or drink but I only pass through Bruxelles rapidly on my way to somewhere else so it's all I know...
Er, there's the mannekin pis too...
