Okay, I'm probably going to kick myself for asking this, but ever since I got my cat from the shelter last year, he likes to have attention on his rear end. What I mean exactly is that he'll come up on your lap and you pet him then he'll turn around and stick his butt in your face like he wants you to pet his butt! At night he'll come in the bedroom to wake me up and he'll come up to me and sit on my head or stick his butt up to my face. it's getting a little rediculous but I have no idea why he's doing this. he loves the back of his hind legs rubbed and not his "butt" rubbed (well I wouldn't know because I don't touch his butt) but he likes his upper hind legs and buttcheeks rubbed. lol. I feel so dumb but I don't know why he acts like this. He's a very lovable cat and he's been to the vet and I never asked why he could be doing this. It irritates my husband when he's laying down watching tv and the cat gets up to put his butt in my husbands face. Please no rude or perverted comments

Cats have scent glands along the tail, on each side of their head on their lips, base of their tail, chin, near their sex organs, and between their front paws. They use these glands to scent mark their territory. When the cat rubs you, he is marking you with his scent, claiming you as "his." He is also picking up your scent. Cats rub up against furniture or doorways for the same reason - to mark the item as "his". (Urine spraying is also a territorial marking, by the way.)
So when he rubs up against you using his butt it's all to claim you as "HIS" Your cat loves you.

It's just a normal cat thing. Cats tend to smell each other's behinds. He's putting his butt in your face so you can sniff him because he knows you are ok and wants you to know he's ok. That spot right at the base of the spine and tail that makes the but go Waaayyyy up, we call that the "butt button." haha. It sounds like your cat has several. The best way to deal with this is to take time to sit on the floor on your knees so your head is sufficiently above your cat's butt and make time to give him the leg massage he likes. And if he puts his butt in your face, gently turn him around to face you then reward him by scratching his legs or buttcheeks. If he knows that he will only be scratched while he is facing you, he should pick up on that pretty quickly.

Some cats just like that. They all have favorite spots on their bodies to get petted on. A female cate that I had for upwards of 17 years had her spot on hr back right against the base of her tail. My husband always thought she was a bit of a "perv". However, the vet even said that the spot she liked best had a lot of nerve endings hence that is where she preferred to get petted. I am not a specialist or anything. This answer just comes from my 20 years of living with cats.

Are you sure its a male? This sounds like the behaviour of a female cat in heat. But I guess its possible that if its a male cat feeling horny he could act the same way. Neuter him if he is not already. Also, next time you are at the vet I would mention it just in case.

This is the motion they make when 'Mom' cat cleans them up as kittens, he's transferred this to you--you're now 'mom' to him. Congratulations!

Go ahead and make him happy, it's not weird to pet their butt end so long as you stay away from touching anything unsanitary back there. Legs, lower belly, top of the hips--all good massage places. Use a brush if you prefer.

Yep it is a cat thing. My 14 year old (cat) loves to show you her butt! I just have to move it so I can pet her head!

haha! i know what you mean, i think its just a cat thing though. when i'm lying on the sofa BOTH of my cats find it especially entertaining to come up to me - face first, all nice like, for a strokey - they then proceed to turn round and stand with their bums right in my face. it happens so often that i'm used to it now. my husband is newer to cats and he too finds it pretty gross. i just yell "cat bum" at him whenever it happens and make him laugh. i push the cats bum away gently and they tend to lay down after that. mine aren't massive keen on their back legs being stroked but this is obviously just a thing your cat enjoys - all cats are individuals like that.

Is your cat a little portly? We have a cat that does this and our vet says that it is because she can't reach her hind quarters to clean herself properly so she looks to us to pay attention to that area for her....
