what does that say about their sensitivity to their hardships? I was seriously appalled at those derogatory remarks and went off on them but the scariest part was that people jumped right on the bandwagon (as they will do now) and agreed! and then gave me thumbs down b/c I refused to lower my standards with agreement.

Bless you Hope. I grew up in a home with a sister who is mentally disabled from a high fever because of meningitis that she was exposed to when she was very young. It was very difficult for us and our parents to face seeing a beautiful young girl become so ill and the results be severe mental retardation. She is now 42 years old. I'm glad for folks like you who make a stand for what is right. GBU, and thanks.

Hi Hope :)
Sometimes it is hard to approach a person with a mental disability. I've at least seen and interacted with a few young adults with Downs Syndrome. Its kinda strange I suppose, but, I've found these people pretty refreshing. I sense no pretense. They've struck me as very honest with their emotions and their interaction with other people.
As to other types of mental disability, I've found that patience goes a long way.
best to you :)
Edit: There is a HUGE difference between "mentally ill" and "mental disability." Confusing the two shows a real lack of understanding

I agree with AngFlowr.
We have become a world of "sensitive" wimps. Most everyone is becoming afraid of words. Words have no special meaning unless one thinks they do. Nothing anything anyone says can put one down, demean them unless that person accepts what is said.
Time to grow up.
A little sensitivity has hurt a lot of people. Why do you think they are so weak. So you think a strong person is hurt by any names they are called? If you look at some of the strongest characters in history they have been called all kind of things. I have been called everything one can think of. I don't let what people say define me. Weak people will let what people say define them.

If you called the guy jerk....I guess I fail to see the difference as far as sensitivity goes.
But I agree whole-heartedly...we could all use a little more sensitivity. We're not going to agree on everything and we're not all going to be able to fit into the same neat little packages, but we're all in this thing called life together. We might as well try to make the best of it for ourselves and, sometimes more importantly, for each other.
Peace. _()_

Nobody has the right to be mentally or verbally abusive toward anyone and paticularly because of religious or non-religious beliefs-YES including you Reiganju and everyone else who thinks you can throw your weight around because you can't be seen.
Hope this mentality reminds me of the bully and his or her victim. The bully gets most of his/her side and as long as they agree they are the popular ones,Of course the bully is the Coward.
Many peope being derogotary, and calling us names on here, are followers, not leaders.
Anyone who stands up for any type of belief is supposed to be fanatical,e.g 'fundie', nutters etc.
Excuse me! i'm a normal woman who loves the Lord and loves the peace He gives and i'm not judging,
The childish behaviour and insults from people are peopke who WILL STOOP to ANY LEVEL TO GET NOTICED AND WE all HAVE THE RIGHT TO LIVE THE WAY WE WANT TO INCLUDING THE DISABLED WHO I LOVE DEARLY.
nAME CALLING IS USUALLY from a naive, small-minded
a***hole.
Absolutely pathetic and UNNECCESSARY!

The most mentally disabling thing in the world is sin. And we are ALL sinners! That means we are ALL mentally disabled, from God's point of view. Sin warps our thinking and darkens our hearts. So, it's a case of pots calling kettles black.
Keep your standards up, honey!

People who are insecure or scared of what they do not know or understand are likely to act in such a manner.
I will never understand it. All I can say is take it with a grain of salt and handle the situation with peace of mind, strength of spirit, and harmony.

Matthew 12:34 - O generation of vipers, how can ye, being evil, speak good things? for out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaketh.
1 Peter 5:5 - Likewise, ye younger, submit yourselves unto the elder. Yea, all of you be subject one to another, and be clothed with humility: for God resisteth the proud, and giveth grace to the humble

As a sufferer of a mental illness, it is understandable that most of us are still "in the closet" due to popular public opinion.
Kudos to you for not lowering your standards. We need more people like you!

Feeling pity for "whack jobs" isn't being sensitive to their hardships. Going off on people on the subject isn't the best way to handle it. That you did shows a lack of sensitivity on your part.
